VinFast has reportedly paused plans to deepen localisation of three electric vehicles in India as the Vietnamese automaker reassesses development costs.
The affected programmes include VF3, VF6 and VF7, according to a Reuters report citing sources and a supplier memo.

VF3, VF6 And VF7 Localisation Put On Hold
According to the report, VinFast had been working with suppliers to develop and source components locally for VF3, VF6 and VF7. Increased localisation could have reduced dependence on imported components and helped the company achieve more competitive pricing. However, a July memo reportedly instructed suppliers to “hold all activities” associated with development work for the three programmes.
VinFast also asked suppliers to provide details of investments already made, including expenditure on tooling, engineering and materials, along with supporting documents. One source cited in the report said VinFast was unable to meet its targeted costs for developing the components in India, prompting the company to pause the work. The suspension has been described as temporary, suggesting that VinFast could reconsider these programmes depending on its cost assessment and future product strategy.
VF6 And VF7 India Operations Continue
VinFast has clarified that its plans for VF6 and VF7 currently sold in India have not been suspended. Both electric SUVs will continue to be assembled at the company’s Indian manufacturing facility. VinFast entered the Indian passenger vehicle market in September 2025 with VF6 and VF7. Its Tamil Nadu plant is the company’s first manufacturing facility outside Vietnam and has an initial annual capacity of 50,000 vehicles, scalable to 1.5 lakh units.
The company has committed significant investment towards developing India as a manufacturing base, with the facility also intended to support markets across South Asia, the Middle East and Africa. VinFast has sold around 10,000 vehicles in India so far, according to the report, with these volumes also including vehicles supplied to affiliated ride-hailing company Green SM.
VF3 Plans Face Uncertainty
The reported pause is particularly notable for VF3. The compact two-door electric SUV could potentially have allowed VinFast to enter a more affordable section of India’s EV market. Greater local sourcing would have been important for keeping costs under control in such a price-sensitive segment. With development activities currently on hold, however, the timeline and localisation strategy for VF3 in India remain uncertain. VinFast has not announced that VF3 itself has been cancelled for India.
VinFast Planning India-Specific EVs
Despite the localisation rethink, VinFast maintains that India remains an important part of its long-term manufacturing and business strategy. More significantly, the company says it intends to develop India-specific models instead of relying only on existing global products. VinFast said it is making adjustments based on market research and customer feedback to better address requirements in India.
Recently, a new VinFast EV test mule was spotted testing in India. While the prototype closely resembled the VF5 sold in international markets, it featured a few noticeable differences. This suggests VinFast could be adapting the model specifically for Indian requirements before introducing it here.
The sighting also fits with VinFast’s latest statement that it plans to develop India-specific models rather than simply bringing existing global products to the market unchanged. If the test mule is indeed related to VF5, it could be an early indication of this localisation and product-development strategy taking shape.
This could indicate a shift in product strategy as VinFast evaluates how to achieve the right combination of pricing, localisation and specifications for the Indian market. For now, VF6 and VF7 operations continue as before, while deeper localisation of the two SUVs and development work associated with VF3 have reportedly been put on hold.
