Recent research suggests that GLP-1 receptor agonists may offer benefits beyond metabolic and cardiovascular health, with studies linking their use to lower risks of tuberculosis and serious infections among people with type 2 diabetes.
An international study involving more than 7 million people found that patients with type 2 diabetes taking GLP-1 drugs had a lower risk of developing tuberculosis compared with those using other antidiabetic medicines. The hazard ratio was 0.49 compared with DPP-4 inhibitors, 0.53 with sulfonylureas, 0.60 with metformin and 0.82 with SGLT2 inhibitors.
"These findings suggest that beyond their established metabolic benefits, GLP-1 receptor agonists may confer additional advantages in lowering infection risk," Chih-Cheng Lai, MD, of Chi Mei Medical Center in Taiwan, and colleagues concluded in Nature Communications.
A separate real-world study of more than 50,000 US adults with type 2 diabetes and atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease found that tirzepatide was associated with lower one-year risks of infection-related mortality, infection-related hospitalisation, urinary tract infections and infections across care settings compared with sitagliptin.
The study, led by researchers including Nils Krüger, MD, of Harvard Medical School, also observed lower all-cause mortality among patients taking tirzepatide.
