Fortuner facelift to have same platform and mechanicals
The Toyota Hilux has always been a niche product in India. It appeals to a specific set of buyers who want a rugged lifestyle pickup that can venture far beyond the tarmac. But the arrival of an all-new Hilux isn't just important for pickup enthusiasts. It could also tell us a lot about what's coming next for the Toyota Fortuner.
The reason is fairly straightforward. The Hilux and the Fortuner have always gone hand in hand.
Both models are based on Toyota's ladder-frame platform and have shared engines, underpinnings, and several engineering updates over the years. More often than not, what debuts on the Hilux eventually finds its way to the Fortuner, albeit with a few market-specific changes. That makes the new-generation pickup far more significant than its sales numbers might suggest.
From what has been revealed so far, the new Hilux is expected to get a sharper design, a more upmarket cabin, larger digital displays, improved connectivity, and an expanded suite of safety features. Internationally, Toyota is also expected to continue with its 48V mild-hybrid diesel setup, which brings gains in efficiency and refinement while retaining the capability buyers expect from the Hilux.
Interestingly, these are some of the biggest upgrades the current Fortuner is waiting for. The Fortuner continues to dominate the premium body-on-frame SUV segment in India, despite being around for several years. Its reliability, go-anywhere capability, and strong resale value have helped it stay ahead of newer rivals. At the same time, there's no denying that the cabin and feature list are beginning to show their age, especially as customer expectations continue to evolve.
That's where the new Hilux becomes relevant. If Toyota follows the same formula it has in the past, there's a good chance the next-generation Fortuner will borrow heavily from the new pickup. Expect similar styling cues, a redesigned dashboard, larger screens, updated technology, more safety equipment, and possibly the mild-hybrid diesel powertrain as well.
Of course, Toyota hasn't confirmed any details of the next Fortuner just yet. But if there's one model that offers the best indication of where the iconic SUV is headed, it's the new Hilux. For Indian buyers, this isn't just the launch of Toyota's latest pickup. It's our first meaningful glimpse at the future of the country's most popular ladder-frame SUV.
