A chilling WhatsApp message – “Sell your wife/do anything, just repay this" – has emerged amid the investigation into the alleged murder of 31-year-old Yuvraj Singh Manchanda, with police also examining an alleged fraud racket linked to the two accused in the killing.

According to a Times of India report, the message was cited in an FIR filed by a senior executive who alleged that he was cheated of more than Rs 1.2 crore in a racket involving Manchanda’s former colleague Anya Vats and her partner Sanyam Sachdeva.

Police were probing whether Manchanda had learnt about the duo’s alleged activities before he was killed.

The report said the complainant, a senior vice-president at a non-banking financial company that is a subsidiary of a public sector bank, was allegedly targeted beginning in September 2024.

The complainant was a former schoolmate of Sachdeva.

According to the report, he received what was allegedly a fake Enforcement Directorate notice on WhatsApp. Sachdeva and Vats allegedly claimed that they had high-level government connections and could help settle the matter.

The report mentioned that the duo allegedly also used fabricated notices purportedly issued in the name of the Union Home Ministry, referring to purported cases under laws including the Prevention of Money Laundering Act, Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act and Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act.

The complainant allegedly transferred more than Rs 1.2 crore, primarily to Vats’ bank account, arranging the money through personal savings, loans and borrowings from family members.

Vats subsequently allegedly demanded another Rs 26 crore while claiming that Rs 13.8 crore had been paid to government agencies on the complainant’s behalf.

The complainant eventually approached police after allegedly realising that he had been duped. The cheating case was registered at Parliament Street police station in August, the report said.

The FIR also cited the WhatsApp message allegedly pressuring the complainant to repay the money before Diwali: “Sell your wife/do anything, just repay this."

The report further mentioned that Sachdeva had allegedly duped his estranged wife in connection with a property worth around Rs 4.5 crore in Greater Noida, while another case involved a domestic violence complaint filed by his wife.

Investigators were examining whether Manchanda knew about any of these alleged activities.

WHAT HAPPENED TO YUVRAJ MANCHANDA?

Manchanda went missing on September 6 after telling his family that he had a meeting in Gurugram and would return by around 10 pm. His phone was subsequently switched off.

South-East Delhi DCP Vineet Kumar said a missing-person report was filed at around 4.15 pm on September 11.

Police learnt during the investigation that Manchanda worked as a sales manager at Adani Realty and had left after having a meal at a restaurant in Delhi’s Lajpat Nagar area.

Technical analysis led investigators to Vats, a former associate of Manchanda.

Her phone had also allegedly been untraceable since September 8.

Police subsequently detected a new mobile number allegedly being used by her, and analysis of call records and location details pointed investigators towards Uttarakhand.

A police team traced Vats and Sachdeva there and apprehended them.

“Upon interrogation, they admitted to meeting Yuvraj and confessed to murdering him," DCP Kumar said, according to ANI.

He added that the accused disclosed that they had disposed of Manchanda’s body in Gurugram’s Badshahpur area.

Police subsequently learnt that Gurugram Police had recovered a body on September 10.

The remains had undergone a post-mortem and were later cremated in accordance with procedure.

Photographs of the body and recovered belongings were subsequently shown to Manchanda’s family, who identified him, DCP Kumar said.

Delhi Police secured five days’ custody of Vats and Sachdeva for further questioning, with the DCP saying that other aspects of the case remained under investigation.

FAMILY QUESTIONED HANDLING OF BODY

According to ANI, advocate Rajat Jain, a friend of Manchanda, questioned the timeline surrounding the recovery and handling of the body.

He claimed ZIPNET records showed that the body was found on September 10 and disposed of on September 14, but the information was uploaded to the portal only on September 16.

Manchanda’s sister also alleged that the family was not given his personal belongings or the post-mortem report.

She said the family was informed that the decomposed body had remained in the mortuary for three days before being cremated on September 14.

Gurgaon Police denied any delay on its part and maintained that Delhi Police should have registered a missing FIR within 24 hours and alerted Gurgaon Police in time.

TOI also reported that investigators have seized an illegal pistol and Manchanda’s car for forensic examination.

The accused’s phones were reportedly sent to the Forensic Science Laboratory to determine whether searches related to disposing of a body were conducted.

Investigators also found that the accused stopped in Vrindavan while allegedly fleeing towards Uttarakhand and were examining whether the stop was intended to evade police.

The report further said the accused have allegedly been changing their statements regarding a purported monetary dispute with Manchanda.

Vats allegedly claimed that Manchanda had threatened her, but an officer told TOI that no evidence supporting the claim had been found so far.

Police are continuing to investigate the motive for Manchanda’s alleged murder, including whether his possible knowledge of the alleged fraud cases had any connection with his death.
