Google has launched Googlebook, a computing platform that merges ChromeOS and Android into a single desktop operating system, alongside five laptop models built with hardware partners and priced from $899.
The new operating system offers tighter integration with Android phones, built-in Gemini support and a "Create My Widget" feature, Google said. On-device Gemini Intelligence tools are powered by neural processing units that Google said deliver more than 45 TOPS of performance; a separate report on the launch put the figure at more than 40 TOPS.
All five launch devices come with at least 16GB of RAM, rising to 32GB on some models, and at least 256GB of SSD storage. Google said the laptops are built from materials including aluminium, magnesium alloy and carbon fibre, with touchscreens of up to 2.8K resolution designed to remain visible in direct sunlight.
Each model has a backlit keyboard and a glass-surfaced haptic trackpad with native gesture support, Google said, along with audio systems of up to six speakers supporting Dolby Atmos and noise-cancelling microphones. All launch models include fingerprint scanners.
The laptops also feature a light strip on the lid that Google calls the Glowbar, which shows battery level, responds to Gemini interactions and lights up at startup. Google said it is opening the Glowbar to developers so they can build custom animations.

Every Googlebook purchase includes 12 months of Google AI Pro, which bundles 5TB of cloud storage and Gemini Advanced tools, alongside three months each of YouTube Premium and Adobe Photoshop. A separate report on the launch said buyers would also receive three months of Capcut and a year of free GeForce Now streaming. Google said Googlebook OS will receive feature updates for up to 10 years.
Pre-orders for Googlebook are open on the Google Store, Best Buy and other retailers. The devices go on sale in the US from October 4, followed by Canada, the UK, Ireland, France, Germany and Australia on October 5.
