Filmmaker Sanjay Gupta has once again sparked discussion on social media, this time by questioning Bollywood's growing dependence on remixes, remakes and sequels. His comments come at a time when several iconic Hindi film songs are being recreated for new-age audiences, reigniting the debate around originality in the entertainment industry.

In recent weeks, audiences have been introduced to revamped versions of popular tracks from the late 1990s and early 2000s. The recreated version of ‘Chunnari Chunnari,’ originally featured in Salman Khan and Sushmita Sen's 1999 hit Biwi No. 1, was recently released as part of Hai Jawani Toh Ishq Hona Hai. More recently, a new version of ‘Ucha Lamba Kad’ from Akshay Kumar and Katrina Kaif's Welcome was unveiled for Welcome To The Jungle.
Against this backdrop, Gupta shared a pointed observation on social media on June 1, taking aim at the industry's increasing reliance on nostalgic content. “Film music in 2026: every super-hit from 20 years ago has been remixed and released. My genuine concern: what will they remix in 2046? The remixes?” he wrote.

The filmmaker followed it up with another post that broadened the conversation beyond music and touched upon the larger issue of creative originality in Bollywood. “Hypothetical but important: Bollywood is banned from prequels, sequels, remakes and remixes. Original ideas only. What happens? A) Best era of Indian cinema begins. B) Industry collapses in 6 months.”

Gupta's remarks are the latest in a series of social media posts through which the filmmaker has voiced concerns about trends within the film industry. Recently, he also questioned the enforcement of age restrictions in cinemas after observing a large number of underage viewers attending a screening of an adults-only Hollywood horror film despite its certification.
Yesterday evening I went for a just released Malayalam film and I was the only one in the theatre.
In the next screen my son was watching OBSESSION and the theatre was packed with kids most of whom were underage.
It’s amazing how this film is sensation all over. — Sanjay Gupta (@_SanjayGupta) May 30, 2026
