With the 2027 ODI World Cup firmly in sight, the Indian team management is leaving no stone unturned in their preparations. Ahead of the upcoming ODI series against Afghanistan, the Indian ODI squad is set to assemble for a short, intensive training camp in Mullanpur, New Chandigarh.

Key white-ball stalwarts, including Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, and Shreyas Iyer, are expected to train at the Mullanpur facility from June 9 to 11, it is learnt. Following the camp, the squad will take a short flight up north to Dharamsala, which is scheduled to host the first ODI on June 13.

The scheduling presents a unique logistical challenge for the Indian camp. The ODI training window (June 9-11) directly overlaps with the back end of the one-off Test against Afghanistan, which will be played at the same venue from June 6-10.

To ensure seamless preparation across formats, the Indian support staff has devised a contingency plan. Should the Test extend beyond Day 3, the coaching and support personnel are prepared to divide their workloads, simultaneously managing the ongoing red-ball game and overseeing the white-ball specialists’ nets sessions.

A major focal point of the Mullanpur camp is workload management. The mercury at New Chandigarh is currently hovering around 40°C. Coming off a grueling IPL season, the team management is highly cautious about the physical toll on their frontline pacers. It is practically impossible to expect frontline speedsters like Mohammed Siraj, Prasidh Krishna and Gurnoor Brar to bowl full throttle in the extreme heat without risking injury or severe fatigue. To mitigate this and ensure the batters still get high-quality practice, the selection committee has drafted in a specialised group of net bowlers.

The group of bowlers brought in to assist the Test batters includes Auqib Nabi, Zeeshan Ansari, Saransh Jain, Shivang Kumar, Mayank Yadav and Prince Yadav. According to sources, these bowlers are likely to be asked to stay back after their red-ball duties to bowl to the ODI batters during their June 9–11 camp.

Notably, Prince will transition directly from assisting in the nets to joining the main roster, as he is officially part of the squad for the ODI leg of the tour.
