Welcome to Opta Analyst’s Interactive World Cup Atlas ahead of the 2026 edition in Canada, Mexico and the United States.

Our World Cup Atlas below is available in two variations: a desktop version, and a mobile version.

For the best user experience, we recommend viewing on desktop because that enables you to access the Atlas’ full repertoire. Essentially, the Atlas looks at the history of the men’s FIFA World Cup from its inaugural tournament in 1930 all the way through to 2026, identifying the key storylines, moments and records from the greatest sporting event on the planet. Of course, with it being on Opta Analyst, you can expect plenty of stats and data visuals along the way, and it is set on an eye-catching map of the world.

You can either scroll through every single tournament or select specific World Cups from the timeline down the left-hand side.

If viewing on mobile, you should still see all the same content, but the map for each World Cup will only be static.

Either way, you’ll be able to look back on the stories of every World Cup – there’s much to explore, but where do you start?

Of course, you could go all the way back to 1930 and Uruguay’s success as hosts. The World Cup then entered a period of Italian dominance before the tournament was forced into a 12-year hiatus due to the outbreak of World War II.

Not long after its return, Brazil’s love affair with the World Cup entered full swing – their run of three successes in four tournaments was only interrupted by England’s sole taste of glory in 1966.

Brazil’s third success in 1970 came in Mexico, which will become the first country to host three World Cups when El Tri begin the 2026 edition against South Africa at the Azteca next week.

The second time Mexico played host was in 1986, which is remembered as one of the iconic tournaments in part because of the heroics and controversy of Diego Maradona, who led Argentina to their second crown.

Maradona’s heir apparent, Lionel Messi, inspired Argentina to glory last time out in Qatar, denying France back-to-back titles.

Wherever you begin with the Opta Analyst’s Interactive World Cup Atlas, you’re bound to stoke feelings of nostalgia and excitement as the countdown to 2026 enters its final days…
