Directed by Guy Ritchie, In the Grey reunites him with Cavill after The Man from U.N.C.L.E.
A full blown box office bomb, and that's despite having Ritchie, Cavill, Gyllenhaal and González on the ticket.
Since it only came out three weeks ago and it's already heading to digital that's... probably not a great sign.
Makes sense for a Ritchie movie — they're not exactly criterion cinema (and nor should they be) so audiences usually appreciate them for what they are, which is capers that don't demand too much of them.
Taylor also felt that "Cavill and Gyllenhaal are as stiff as boards" and that "González also struggles to make an impression", so overall, wasn't a great time.
Henry Cavill likes to stick to his lane when it comes to action movies at the moment, but whether he's playing a spy or a soldier, or a man with a suspicious mustache, he's become one of those stars who's become very happy and comfortable working under a specific director. So, you'd think that would make this film an easy win, and yet, here we are, three weeks after it opened in theaters, In the Grey is already on digital.
The cast of In the Grey includes Jake Gyllenhaal (Nightcrawler) as Bronco Beauregard, Eiza González (Baby Driver) as Rachel Wild, Kristofer Hivju (Game of Thrones) as Axel Oloffson, Fisher Stevens (Succession) as Mr. Horowitz, Salazar’s lawyer, Rosamund Pike (Gone Girl) as Bobby Sheen, and Emmett J. Scanlan (Peaky Blinders) as Mick Dunne.
Directed by Guy Ritchie, In the Grey reunites him with Cavill after The Man from U.N.C.L.E. and The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare. The movie follows a covert team of elite operatives who are hired to pull off an impossible multi-billion-dollar heist after a ruthless despot steals a billion-dollar fortune. What starts as a high-stakes robbery quickly spirals into a violent game of strategy, deception, and survival.
How Successful Was 'In The Grey'?
Financially, it was a disaster. A full blown box office bomb, and that's despite having Ritchie, Cavill, Gyllenhaal and González on the ticket. It only grossed $13.5 million domestically against a production budget of around $70 million. Since it only came out three weeks ago and it's already heading to digital that's... probably not a great sign. Critically it wasn't a total wipeout but it still wasn't exactly a gold star either. It sits at 48% with critics on Rotten Tomatoes, while audiences were much kinder, giving it 83%. Makes sense for a Ritchie movie — they're not exactly criterion cinema (and nor should they be) so audiences usually appreciate them for what they are, which is capers that don't demand too much of them.
Collider's own review by Robert Brian Taylor felt that the movie felt rushed and struggled to put its stamp on the genre, with Ritchie failing to find that secret sauce to truly make it tick. Taylor also felt that "Cavill and Gyllenhaal are as stiff as boards" and that "González also struggles to make an impression", so overall, wasn't a great time.
In the Grey is available digitally now.
