Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has revealed that he has approached the director to helm a biopic on legendary Ahom commander Lachit Borphukan.
"I think if our government can produce a film on Lachit Borphukan, we can make his heroics known globally.
"If Aditya Dhar is unable to direct the film, we will approach other directors.
In its 2026-27 Budget presented on July 10, the government announced plans to support films based on the lives of Lachit Borphukan and freedom fighter Kushal Konwar.Lachit Borphukan is revered as one of Assam's greatest military leaders.

Fresh off the phenomenal success of 'Dhurandhar: The Revenge', filmmaker Aditya Dhar could soon be taking on another high-profile project. Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has revealed that he has approached the director to helm a biopic on legendary Ahom commander Lachit Borphukan. According to the Chief Minister, discussions with Dhar have already begun, with the vision of creating a Hindi film that introduces the Assamese hero's legacy to audiences across the globe.Speaking during a Facebook Live session on Thursday, Himanta Biswa Sarma lauded Dhar's filmmaking abilities while explaining why he was chosen for the proposed venture. Referring to the filmmaker's recent blockbuster, he said, "The movie Dhurandhar was a big hit. Aditya Dhar was the director and he is among the best known names among his contemporaries," as quoted by PTI.Sarma added that the government wants to showcase Lachit Borphukan's extraordinary life through a grand cinematic adaptation. "I think if our government can produce a film on Lachit Borphukan, we can make his heroics known globally. And, it will be a special achievement for us," he said.The Chief Minister also shared that the initial conversations with Dhar have been encouraging.He expects the director to visit Assam in August for more detailed discussions regarding the film's scale and creative direction.At the same time, Sarma clarified that the project will move ahead regardless of whether Dhar eventually directs it. "If Aditya Dhar is unable to direct the film, we will approach other directors. The objective is to ensure that a grand biopic on Lachit Borphukan is made," he stated.The proposed film is part of the Assam government's broader initiative to highlight the state's rich historical legacy through cinema. Despite battling severe illness during the campaign, his leadership and courage have made him an enduring symbol of patriotism, with his memory honoured every year through Lachit Divas.As of now, Aditya Dhar has not officially announced his next directorial venture after the blockbuster success of 'Dhurandhar: The Revenge'.
