Euphoria season 3 kills off a controversial character.
The most recent episode of Euphoria season 3 raises the stakes. As tensions escalate over money and drugs, Naz (Jack Topalian) arrives at Cassie’s (Sydney Sweeney) house, demanding payment for the money that Nate Jacobs (Jacob Elordi) borrowed from him. Unfortunately, things don't go smoothly, and by the end of the episode, Nate meets a gruesome demise.
The shocking death of one of Euphoria's most controversial characters triggered a lot of strong reactions as many viewers took to social media to voice their opinions. While opinions varied across the board, most fans weren't too upset about Nate's death. Most were shocked, and a large number of people were celebrating the downfall of one of Euphoria's biggest antagonists.
Despite all the people who celebrated the death of Nate due to his abusive tendencies throughout the entire series, there were still several people who were genuinely upset by it. However, some of those reactions are clearly sarcastic due to his history and the fact that the character is almost universally disliked.
Euphoria creator Sam Levinson also shared his thoughts regarding Nate's death. He revealed in an interview with Esquire that the death of Elordi's character was something that he knew fans of the show had wanted to see for quite some time. And, as a result, he decided that he would kill him off in a way that would shock fans and make them question if the death was too much or if it delivered the right amount of justice.
There's this kind of funny thing where I know what the audience wants in terms of justice or karma and with that in mind, I always think, Well, how can I give it to them? How can I give them what they want, but make it so horrific and anxiety-inducing that by the time it happens, the audience isn't so sure they wanted it?
Levinson said that he always intended for Nate to die in Euphoria season 3. Given the damage and manipulation the character caused over the years, he felt like this was inevitable and that his actions would eventually catch up with him. However, he said he intentionally included moments that made him more human this season.
According to the creator, he made the character more vulnerable this season so the viewers could sympathize with him before he died. He explained this was his way of challenging the audience to question their own reactions to Nate's disturbing death. The goal was to leave everyone conflicted about whether his fate was too harsh.
