Google Gemini Intelligence may roll out on premium phones first — here’s why

Google’s Gemini Intelligence, which was revealed a few days ago, has already managed to get tech enthusiasts excited with its impressive set of features. A number of recent reports suggest that Gemini Intelligence may not work on just any device. Moreover, the specifications mention that devices would need Gemini Nano V3 or newer, and currently only a handful of devices support it. Gemini Intelligence also demands flagship-level SoC performance and requires devices to meet quality-in-field standards, such as maintaining a low crash rate. The extensive list of requirements effectively places Gemini Intelligence in a very exclusive category, which could disappoint users who were hoping to experience its new automation and assistant features on older or mid-range devices.

Google’s Gemini Intelligence, which was revealed a few days ago, has already managed to get tech enthusiasts excited with its impressive set of features. Among its biggest highlights is its ability to automate tasks and execute them entirely in the background on its own. A footnote on Android’s official page lists the specifications required for the feature to function properly, and based on those requirements, it is fair to say that Gemini Intelligence is shaping up to be a highly premium and exclusive feature.

The listed requirements include at least 12GB of RAM. Beyond that, the device must support AI Core, an Android system service that exposes an API for apps to perform AI tasks using the on-device Gemini Nano model. Moreover, the specifications mention that devices would need Gemini Nano V3 or newer, and currently only a handful of devices support it.

Gemini Intelligence also demands flagship-level SoC performance and requires devices to meet quality-in-field standards, such as maintaining a low crash rate. Devices must also offer five OS upgrades and six years of quarterly security updates, along with support for the Android Virtualization Framework and pKVM.

Additionally, the requirements mention enforced media performance standards, including support for spatial audio, low-light enhancements, HDR gaming, annual GPU and driver updates.

The extensive list of requirements effectively places Gemini Intelligence in a very exclusive category, which could disappoint users who were hoping to experience its new automation and assistant features on older or mid-range devices.
