The YZF-R2 has a design that is clearly inspired by the recent set of Yamaha R-series bikes like the YZF-R9 and YZF-R7. This is evident from the styling of the fairing, with the LED DRLs as well as the cuts and creases. The side and tail sections too are heavily inspired by the aforementioned bikes. On the whole, the YZF-R2 has a recognisable design while still managing to look fresh.
Powering the bike is a 204cc, liquid-cooled, DOHC, single-cylinder engine that makes 26.1bhp and 19.1Nm. The engine is mated to a six-speed gearbox and gets a slip-and-assist clutch as standard. In the mid-spec and M variants, the bi-directional quickshifter is fitted as standard.
One of the biggest talking points of the new YZF-R2 is the introduction of a new diamond frame instead of the Deltabox one in the YZF-R15. The swingarm, however, is made of aluminium. The frame is suspended by a USD fork and a monoshock.

In terms of competition it goes head on against the KTM RC 200.
