The stability of the ruling Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam government under Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay has come under intense scrutiny after recent political developments in Tamil Nadu exposed the fragile arithmetic behind the administration’s survival.

Even though the Vijay-led government managed to win the floor test in the Tamil Nadu Assembly with 144 votes in favour, political observers and opposition leaders argue that the coalition’s dependence on outside support, defections, and ideological compromises could make governance increasingly difficult in the months ahead.

The debate sharpened further after TTV Dhinakaran launched a sharp attack on the state government, alleging political opportunism and questioning whether the arrangement could survive for long.

HOW THE TVK GOVERNMENT SURVIVED THE FLOOR TEST

The Vijay-led government crossed the majority mark in the Assembly only after securing support from multiple parties and independents.

The government received backing from Congress, CPI, CPI(M), VCK, IUML, and expelled AMMK MLA S Kamaraj during the trust vote.

That support helped the government comfortably clear the confidence motion numerically.

However, political analysts point out that the margin itself masks the deeper vulnerability of the administration. The ruling formation does not possess a stable, standalone majority and is dependent on a broad and politically diverse support structure.

The support base includes parties with different ideological positions, long-term political ambitions, and competing regional interests.

Maintaining cohesion among such allies over contentious policy decisions could become one of the biggest challenges for Vijay’s administration.

Tamil Nadu politics has historically witnessed coalition strains whenever governments rely heavily on external support rather than a dominant single-party mandate.

Analysts cited by several Tamil media outlets have noted that sustaining political discipline among supporting legislators may prove harder as governance pressures increase.

DEFECTIONS HAVE TRIGGERED A POLITICAL STORM

The controversy intensified after AMMK’s lone MLA, S Kamaraj, extended support to the TVK government and was subsequently expelled from the party.

Dhinakaran accused the ruling party of engaging in “horse-trading" to secure legislative backing.

“Vijay says he will act at horse speed, but he has bought the horse through bargaining," he said sarcastically while addressing reporters in Tiruchirappalli.

The AMMK chief further warned that if ministerial berths were offered to defecting legislators, his party would demand a CBI inquiry into the developments.

These allegations have added to concerns that the government’s numerical strength may depend more on political management than ideological unity.

Opposition parties have increasingly framed the support extended to TVK as transactional rather than programmatic.

Several political commentators in Tamil Nadu have also argued in television debates and newspaper columns that governments dependent on shifting loyalties often face instability during key legislative votes, cabinet expansion exercises, or policy disagreements.

IDEOLOGICAL CONTRADICTIONS MAY HURT TVK

Another major issue confronting Vijay is the perception of ideological inconsistency.

Dhinakaran questioned how AIADMK legislators could support a leader who had previously criticised the AIADMK as corrupt.

He also accused the government of compromising political principles merely to remain in power.

Political analysts say this contradiction could become a long-term problem for TVK, especially because Vijay had positioned himself during the election campaign as a clean alternative to both the DMK and AIADMK.

Now, with support reportedly coming from sections associated with rival political camps, the opposition is attempting to portray TVK as another conventional power-driven formation rather than a transformative political movement.

Critics have also highlighted the ideological diversity within the coalition backing the government.

Left parties, regional outfits, minority-focused parties, and former AIADMK-linked legislators may not always agree on governance priorities, economic policies, or electoral strategies.

That balancing act may become increasingly complicated as the government moves beyond its honeymoon phase.

“REELS GOVERNMENT" ATTACK ADDS TO PRESSURE

Dhinakaran also mocked Vijay’s style of governance, saying the Chief Minister must move from an “Instagram reels administration" to real governance.

The criticism reflects a broader narrative being pushed by opponents, that Vijay’s popularity as a film star and social media figure may not automatically translate into durable political administration.

Political observers note that celebrity-driven political movements often face the toughest test after assuming office, when governance outcomes begin to matter more than campaign messaging.

According to analysts quoted by multiple Indian media outlets, Vijay now faces pressure on several fronts simultaneously, maintaining coalition unity, delivering governance, managing public expectations, and countering allegations of opportunistic politics.

WHY THE NUMBERS COULD REMAIN A CONSTANT THREAT

The biggest challenge before the TVK government remains arithmetic.

Even a small shift in support from allies or independent legislators could significantly affect the government’s stability in the Assembly.

If disgruntlement emerges within supporting blocs, the administration may repeatedly face political uncertainty during crucial votes.

Dhinakaran himself claimed the government’s stability was already under threat and questioned whether the arrangement involving TVK and Left parties could last another six months.

At the same time, internal turbulence within opposition parties such as the AIADMK may continue to influence legislative equations.

Dhinakaran alleged that efforts were being made to weaken the AIADMK from within and accused certain leaders of acting in favour of TVK.

For Vijay, therefore, the challenge is no longer just electoral victory.

The tougher task lies in converting a politically complex coalition into a stable governing structure capable of surviving both Assembly arithmetic and growing opposition attacks.

As Tamil Nadu politics enters a new phase after the rise of TVK, the durability of Vijay’s government may ultimately depend less on popularity and more on whether he can successfully manage the relentless “number game" inside the Assembly.
