A large-scale demolition and land clearance operation is underway along Mumbai’s western suburban railway corridor, where authorities are removing illegal structures built on railway land between Goregaon and Malad.
The action is being carried out under directions issued by the Bombay High Court as part of efforts to reclaim land required for future railway infrastructure projects.
According to a Free Press Journal, the ongoing operation covers railway property located on the eastern side between km markers 28/3 and 28/6.
Nearly 1,500 square metres of encroached land is being cleared during the drive, which involves the removal of both permanent constructions and temporary settlements.
According to railway authorities, the demolition exercise includes 36 permanent structures and 24 temporary encroachments.
So far, 26 permanent structures have already been razed as teams continue clearance work with the help of heavy machinery and security personnel.
The drive is being conducted in compliance with a Bombay High Court order issued on 26 February this year.
To maintain law and order during the operation, a large deployment of personnel from Mumbai Police, Railway Protection Force, Government Railway Police and various railway departments has been stationed at the site.
JCB machines and dumpers are also being used to remove debris and clear the reclaimed railway land.
Officials said the demolition process is being closely supervised to avoid disruptions or untoward incidents.
The latest clearance operation follows another major anti-encroachment drive recently carried out at Garib Nagar in Bandra East, where around 500 illegal structures were targeted for removal.
Railway officials said work at Garib Nagar has now entered its final stage, with manual dismantling of upper floors continuing above nearly 100 protected ground-floor units.
