The investigation into the discovery of a woman’s decomposed body parts inside a suitcase on a train in Agra has taken investigators to Chennai, where police have allegedly found more remains at a house linked to two suspects.
Police have identified the deceased as 38-year-old Hayuthan Nisha, a native of Odisha. Investigators suspect she was murdered and her body was cut into pieces. Two men, identified as Manik Uddin Laskar and Bhagabati Majhi, are currently being sought in connection with the case, according to a report by NDTV.
The case came to light on August 5, when a train travelling from Chennai Central towards New Delhi reached Agra. Railway police were alerted after passengers noticed a foul smell coming from a suitcase. When the luggage was opened, officers found decomposed human remains inside.
Investigators then began tracing the suitcase and those who had handled it. CCTV footage from the railway station reportedly showed two people carrying a trolley similar to the one in which the remains were found. The footage was shared with Chennai Central Railway Police for further investigation, reported the outlet.
The trail eventually led police to Guduvancheri in Chennai, where the two suspects were believed to have lived. When the house was searched, investigators allegedly found additional decomposed body parts inside a cooking vessel.
The discovery has added a new dimension to the investigation as police try to establish exactly what happened inside the house and how the remains were transported to Agra.
A police official said the suspects have not yet been arrested and that scientific examination would be important in establishing whether all the recovered remains belong to the same person.
“We are enquiring. Once we catch the two suspects, we will get to know the motive of the murder. The two suspects are on the run. Based on scientific evidence, it will be clear whether the body parts belong to the same person," the official told NDTV.
Police are also examining the circumstances surrounding Nisha’s disappearance. A missing-person complaint was filed based on a complaint from her son, and further investigation is underway.
The identities and whereabouts of the two suspects remain under investigation, while police are using CCTV footage and forensic evidence to reconstruct the movements of the victim, the suspects and the suitcase.
