West Bengal Government To Hand Over 120 Acres In Siliguri 'Chicken Neck' Corridor To Centre: Report

The Suvendu Adhikari-led West Bengal government has initiated the transfer of 120 acres of land in the strategically vital Siliguri Corridor to the central government, Times Now reported. The Siliguri Corridor, widely referred to as the 'Chicken Neck', is India's sole narrow land bridge connecting the northeastern states to the rest of the country. Flanked by Nepal, Bhutan and Bangladesh, and situated in relative proximity to China's Tibet region, the stretch is among the most sensitive in India's security calculus. The corridor functions as the primary artery for transportation, trade, military logistics and supply chains serving all eight northeastern states. Given this importance, land-related decisions in the region carry outsized significance for India's defence planning and border security apparatus.

The Suvendu Adhikari-led West Bengal government has initiated the transfer of 120 acres of land in the strategically vital Siliguri Corridor to the central government, Times Now reported.

The handover process is already underway.

At its narrowest points, the corridor is just 20 to 22 kilometres wide, making it acutely vulnerable in any military or geopolitical scenario.

The corridor functions as the primary artery for transportation, trade, military logistics and supply chains serving all eight northeastern states.

Given this importance, land-related decisions in the region carry outsized significance for India's defence planning and border security apparatus.

The Centre has not formally disclosed the specific purpose of the land acquisition.

However, such a transfer could potentially facilitate the development of defence infrastructure, logistics facilities, connectivity projects or security installations in the area.

The move comes in the early days of Adhikari's tenure as Chief Minister, following the BJP's historic victory in the West Bengal Assembly elections.

The win is widely regarded as the party's most significant political breakthrough in the state in decades.

Since assuming office, the new government has acted swiftly on several fronts, including administrative overhauls, law and order measures, investigations into alleged irregularities linked to former Trinamool Congress leaders, and steps to strengthen governance coordination with the central government.
