Vice President JD Vance privately sought direct, unfiltered assessments from US military commanders on the Iran war, with the briefings raising concerns about depleted weapons stockpiles and Iran’s resilience, according to a New York Times report.

Citing interviews with more than half a dozen current and former US officials who spoke on condition of anonymity, the NYT reported that Vance contacted commanders in the Middle East, Europe and Asia to hear their individual assessments before they were consolidated into a Pentagon view.

Commanders Warned Of Depleted US Weapons Stocks

The commanders gave Vance a “sobering private assessments" of the strain the conflict was placing on US military resources. According to the NYT, they were particularly concerned about dwindling supplies of Patriot air-defense interceptors, with one theater having fewer than 100 by late spring.

US stocks of Army Tactical Missile Systems had also been exhausted in that theater, while supplies of the Precision Strike Missile were similarly under pressure, the report said. Commanders told Vance that stocks of critical munitions were at their “lowest they had ever seen".

They also warned that transferring additional weapons to the Middle East could affect the US ability to deter or respond to threats from China, Russia and North Korea.

Iran Proving More Resilient Than Expected

Vance’s conversations also focused on Iran’s ability to absorb punishment, its military adaptability and potential actions around the Strait of Hormuz.

According to people who spoke to the NYT, Vance came away with concerns about the war’s overall strategy and prospects for success. The assessments suggested that Iran’s leadership was prepared to endure significant damage rather than capitulate, while the US faced limited supplies of defensive weapons to counter Iranian retaliation.

The report said Vance incorporated these assessments into private discussions with US President Donald Trump and his inner circle.

Public Claims vs Private Assessments

The NYT reported that there was a gap between the commanders’ private assessments and some of the administration’s public messaging.

Trump has publicly claimed that the US had won the war and that Iran’s military had been severely weakened, while also dismissing concerns about US weapons supplies.

The report said Trump was also receiving briefings from Gen. Dan Caine, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, on the strain on US stockpiles and Iran’s resilience.

The calls by Vance were known to Trump, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, Caine, Secretary of State and national security adviser Marco Rubio, and White House Chief of Staff Susie Wiles, according to officials cited by the NYT.

Pentagon spokesman Sean Parnell said Hegseth had facilitated direct access to combatant commanders so the president’s team could receive “all available data points" on ongoing operations. Caine’s spokesman also rejected any suggestion of a gap in military advice to senior leaders.
