As campaigning gathers pace ahead of the 2027 Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections, Suheldev Bharatiya Samaj Party (SBSP) chief Om Prakash Rajbhar has claimed that the state will eventually be divided into four parts. He also said that if Purvanchal is carved out as a separate state, its first Chief Minister will be from the Rajbhar community.

Addressing a meeting of party workers in Deoria on Sunday, Rajbhar, an ally of the BJP, urged them not to lose hope and said the political battle was intensifying.

Speaking to ANI later, the Cabinet Minister said the division of Uttar Pradesh was inevitable and stressed that his party would support any political party that backs the creation of a separate Purvanchal state and supports a member of the Rajbhar community becoming its first Chief Minister.

“When the state is divided—encompassing regions like Purvanchal, Madhyanchal, Bundelkhand, and Harit Pradesh—if you look at the area where we are currently seated, starting from Ambedkar Nagar, the Rajbhar community holds the largest vote share across the entire Purvanchal region. Therefore, for any party entering into an alliance, it will be a predetermined condition that the Chief Minister of the future Purvanchal state will be from the Rajbhar community," he said.

During his Deoria rally, Rajbhar also spoke about the political identity of the community, saying that a young person from the Rajbhar community wearing a yellow scarf could be identified from a distance.

Rajbhar also spoke about the demand for sub-categorisation within the 27% OBC reservation quota. He claimed that he had met Prime Minister Narendra Modi over the issue and raised the demand for ensuring a share of the reservation benefits for different OBC communities.

According to Rajbhar, PM Modi told him that while the demand was justified, some people were opposing it and that the issue could be considered after the completion of a caste census.

Rajbhar has been demanding the division of the 27% OBC quota so that different backward communities can receive a share based on their population.

Rajbhar Attacks SP, BSP And Congress

During his speech, the SBSP chief also targeted the opposition Congress, Samajwadi Party (SP) and Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP).

Rajbhar alleged that Congress ruled the country and Uttar Pradesh for decades, while the SP and BSP were in power several times, but claimed that these parties had failed to adequately address the concerns of backward and deprived communities.

He appealed to people not to be misled by the opposition parties and said that the NDA government was working for the welfare of poor and marginalised sections.

Rajbhar also highlighted government pensions and welfare schemes, claiming that their benefits were reaching people directly.

Uttar Pradesh Division Has Been A Political Issue Before

The demand for dividing Uttar Pradesh is not new. In 2011, the then Mayawati-led BSP government passed a resolution in the state Assembly proposing that Uttar Pradesh be split into four states — Purvanchal, Bundelkhand, Awadh Pradesh and Paschim Pradesh. However, the proposal did not receive the support of the Congress-led UPA government at the Centre.

Earlier, in 2000, the northern, predominantly mountainous districts of Uttar Pradesh were carved out to form a separate state, initially named Uttaranchal and later renamed Uttarakhand. The state was created through the Uttar Pradesh Reorganisation Act, 2000, following decades of regional movements seeking separate statehood for the hill areas.
