We have two exciting women’s quarterfinals to watch at the US Open on Tuesday, including an all-American battle between Jessica Pegula and Emma Navarro. The other match is no slouch, either, as it pits the World #1 against the current Wimbledon champion. Our writers share their thoughts on both matches. Predicting these matches are Amanda Bergman, Zain Mustafa, and Nurein Ahmed. Who do you think will reach the semifinals?
US Open Quarterfinal Predictions
Jessica Pegula vs Emma Navarro
Amanda:
While Navarro has played some excellent tennis to get to the quarterfinals, Pegula is one of her worst matchups and she’s playing just as well. Pegula just beat Navarro in straight sets in Cincinnati, though Navarro is playing much better tennis this week than she was there. If Navarro can serve as well as she did against Anna Kalinskaya she certainly has a chance, but Pegula is a better returner than Kalinskaya and won’t be as vulnerable on her own serve.
Prediction: Pegula in 3
Zain:
This all-American clash sees two counterpunchers going up against each other as Jessica Pegula takes on Emma Navarro. Navarro is once again looking like the player she was in 2024, while Pegula continues to be one of the most consistent players on this surface. In a match that will be played mostly from the back of the court, I feel Pegula’s better ball quality should be a big difference. That, along with her superior movement, makes me give Pegula the edge in reaching yet another semifinal in New York.
Prediction: Pegula in 2
Nurein:
Pegula brings a dominant record over Emma Navarro and she’s not taking her eye off the ball even with the No. 1 ranking on the line. Navarro played some exceptional tennis in dismissing Muchova and Kalinskaya, but Pegula won’t give her any rhythm to settle in this match.
Prediction: Pegula in 2
Aryna Sabalenka vs Linda Noskova
Amanda:
Sabalenka has beaten Noskova in straight sets both times they’ve played, but Noskova is only just finding her very best tennis. Coming off a gritty win over Marta Kostyuk, Noskova has showcased a great game as well as mental fortitude that is absolutely crucial against Sabalenka. While Sabalenka should pull through considering her level and pedigree at hard court Grand Slams, this will be her toughest challenge yet.
Prediction: Sabalenka in 3
Zain:
Both of these players are known for their aggression and power baselining, something that is quite effective on the faster New York courts. The two-time defending champion, Aryna Sabalenka, has looked more vulnerable this season than in previous ones, while for Linda Noskova this has been a career year so far, as she won the Wimbledon title.
This match should be determined by which player takes the initiative first from the baseline, and while Sabalenka has clear patterns to have success in this matchup, I feel momentum is on Noskova’s side. If the Czech can take this match deep, I trust her to edge the pressure points and get yet another great win this year.
Prediction: Noskova in 3
Nurein:
Sabalenka looks unstoppable but the consistency that has defined most of her Grand Slam wins has disappeared in recent tournaments. Linda Noskova brings Grand Slam-winning form into this match, but I think Sabalenka will survive. Cleaner ball striking and heavier power should be enough for the Belarusian to hold onto that US Open title for at least one more round.
Prediction: Sabalenka in 3
