Samsung's cryptic teasers point to a wider, new generation of Galaxy Z Fold

Samsung has begun teasing its next generation of foldable smartphones with an eye-grabbing social media campaign ahead of an expected summer Unpacked event. A further video uses a squeegee to smear pink and purple paint into the shape of the number eight, an apparent nod to the eighth generation of the Galaxy Z Fold line. Taken together, the clues point towards a redesigned Galaxy Z Fold8 with a wider, shorter form factor than its predecessor. Notably, none of the teasers mention the Galaxy Z Fold 8 by name. The redesign appears to be reserved for the standard Z Fold8, with a separate Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra expected to retain the older, narrower form factor while offering a higher-resolution internal display.

Samsung has begun teasing its next generation of foldable smartphones with an eye-grabbing social media campaign ahead of an expected summer Unpacked event.

The account, @SamsungMobile, was stripped down to just six posts, each contributing to a loose visual puzzle rather than any conventional product announcement. One clip shows the top sliced off a rectangular image, another depicts a pizza being cut to yield a rectangular slice, and a third features a small puzzle losing its top row, accompanied by the line "feels just right." A further video uses a squeegee to smear pink and purple paint into the shape of the number eight, an apparent nod to the eighth generation of the Galaxy Z Fold line.

Taken together, the clues point towards a redesigned Galaxy Z Fold8 with a wider, shorter form factor than its predecessor. Reports suggest the device could adopt a 16:10 outer screen ratio, a marked departure from the 21:9 ratio used on the Z Fold7, alongside on-screen text describing "a whole new slice" and "a sweet reveal" for the device's shape.

A refreshed Z Flip8 is also anticipated, said to feature revised hinges aimed at reducing the crease that has long been a point of criticism for folding screens.

The teaser campaign relies heavily on sound design as well as visuals, with crisp, close-up audio in each clip evoking the mechanical click of a hinge, which some have read as a deliberate reference to the tactile experience of using a foldable device.

Pricing for the new range is expected to rise. The Z Fold7 launched in July 2025 at $1,999.99, while the Z Flip 7 launched at $1,099.99; it remains to be seen whether the new generation devices command higher prices this time around because of the ongoing global memory supply crunch.

The campaign also lands amid growing competition in the folding phone segment. Motorola released its first book-style Razr Fold earlier this year, while a new Pixel Fold and a long-rumoured foldable iPhone, also said to favour a wider format, are among the devices expected to challenge Samsung's position. Samsung has not yet confirmed a date for its Galaxy Unpacked Summer 2026 event.
