At D23 2026, which ScreenRant is in attendance for, it was revealed that the Avengers Infinity Defense, set to open at Disney California Adventure in 2028, will feature Downey Jr. reprising his role as Tony Stark for the first time since Iron Man's death in Avengers: Endgame back in 2019. As Iron Man was the first hero to kick off the MCU franchise all the way back in 2008, this is bound to be a major deal for those visiting the Disney Parks once the Avengers Infinity Defense opens in 2028. Whether or not the next two Avengers movies will feature Downey Jr. as Tony in any capacity remains to be seen.

Despite his sacrifice in 2019, Doomsday or even Secret Wars could bring Iron Man back through flashbacks, time travel, or variants. However, as of writing, it has not been confirmed if either film will have Downey Jr. in dual roles.

While the Avengers: Doomsday cast has wrapped filming on the upcoming ensemble film, many of them are getting ready to start shooting the 2027 follow-up this year, as Joe and Anthony Russo return to direct the upcoming sequel. Even though the full line-up has yet to be announced, Doctor Doom will be in the Phase 6 finale.

During an interview with Entertainment Weekly at San Diego Comic-Con 2026, the Academy Award winner shared new details about bringing the famous comic book foe to life in The Multiverse Saga. In terms of why Doctor Doom looks like Tony, Downey Jr. only teased how “there’s the science thing, and they’re considered pretty brilliant guys. But Tony had the trauma that turned him into a hero and Doom’s got the exact opposite, to where it takes the prowess of all of these folks to go up against him, and it was a joy to behold."

He continued, "All of you have lived stolen lives. You refuse to give them back. It was really weird to be on the other side of the bad-guy mask because it’s such an isolated vibe. I’m seeing them all socializing and stuff — and I am the enemy!” While his face wasn't seen, Downey Jr. did a cameo as Doctor Doom in The Fantastic Four: First Steps' post-credits scene, setting up his larger role in Avengers: Doomsday.
