Raju Kher Reveals He Sold His House For TV Show That Never Took Off: ‘Channel Disappeared’

Raju Kher has opened up about one of the toughest financial phases of his life and how it affected his relationship with his brother, Anupam Kher. The actor-director recalled a time when a television project went wrong, leaving him without his savings, regular work and even a stable home.

Speaking to Siddharth Kannan, Raju looked back at how he ended up losing money after investing in a television show. He had sold his house at the time and believed the new project would give him a fresh start.

Raju recalled that a new television channel was about to launch and several people, including him, were working on shows for it. He was making a programme called Life Ke Liye Kuch Bhi Karega and had invested the money he got from selling his flat into it.

But things changed suddenly when the channel disappeared. “There was a time when I was going through a bad phase. I had sold my house because a new channel was coming, so I had bought a flat elsewhere. A new channel was going to launch and many people were making pilots, agreements were already signed. I also made a programme Life Ke Liye Kuch Bhi Karega. Suddenly, I got to know that the channel has disappeared. I had invested the money that I got from selling the flat in that programme. I thought that I had a first-class life, a 4-BHK house, everything set for the family. And then, the channel disappeared and no one knew what happened.. there was just a lock on their door," Raju said.

With the project gone, Raju was left with no clear way to recover the money. He also wasn’t getting enough work and had to worry about paying rent.

At that point, Raju naturally turned to his elder brother. Anupam was already a successful actor, and Raju thought he would be able to help him get through the difficult period.

But Anupam was going through his own professional struggle. He had stopped taking up projects because he did not want to do films he felt were not substantial enough.

Raju admitted that, at the time, he felt hurt that his brother did not step in. “I also felt the pressure to pay the rent. I had no one else, I could only talk to my brother, and I thought he will help me. But at that time, he had also stopped working. The reason was that he didn’t want to do any of those weird films, he wanted substantial roles. So, I felt that my brother did not help me out. ‘He could have done so,’ that was my thought at that time," he said.

However, Raju said his perspective changed later. He came across an interview in which Anupam spoke about his personal regret of not having a child of his own. It made Raju think about the fact that his brother, too, had his own struggles that were not always visible to others.

Anupam is married to actor Kirron Kher. Kirron already had a son, Sikander Kher, from her first marriage, and Anupam has often spoken about Sikander as his own child.

Looking back, Raju realised that he had perhaps assumed Anupam had everything figured out because of his success. He felt he had taken his brother for granted without understanding what he might have been dealing with himself.

Raju Kher has worked in both films and television as an actor and director. He started acting in the 1990s and has appeared in films including Ghulam, Jungle, Om Jai Jagadish, Shootout at Wadala, Krrish 3, Main Tera Hero, Uunchai and Patna Shuklla. He also directed television shows, including the 1999 serial Sanskaar, as well as Manzile, Abhilasha and Ret Ka Dariya.
