A photograph showing Leader of the Opposition Rahul Gandhi on a boat with a woman and a child has triggered a political exchange after Union Minister Giriraj Singh questioned the identities of those accompanying the Congress leader.

Singh shared the image on X and sought details about where and when it was taken, as well as the identity of the woman and child in the frame.

“Rahul ji, where was this picture taken, when was it taken, and who are the people with you in this picture? I am curious to know!" Singh wrote.

The photograph shows Gandhi seated in a boat alongside a woman wearing sunglasses and a headscarf, with a child seated between the two. The exact date of the photograph was not immediately clear from Singh’s post.

News18 could not independently verify the authenticity of the photograph.

Congress Reacts

The Congress, however, quickly responded to the speculation surrounding the image and said the woman and child were family members of Gandhi’s friend.

Congress spokesperson Supriya Shrinate hit back at Singh, accusing him of making inappropriate insinuations while clarifying the identities of the people pictured.

“The people in the picture are the wife and child of Rahul’s friend. They were on a family vacation together. The friend is not in the photo."

Shrinate further attacked the Union minister over his post, saying: “You are a lecherous kind of man, who can only have vile thoughts upon seeing a woman and a man together… Don’t let your own frustrations get the better of you," she tweeted.

Avi Dandiya, social media in-charge of the Indian Overseas Congress, also claimed that the photograph was taken in the United States.

“This photograph was taken at Lake Ray Roberts, Texas… Giriraj Singh, you can find out for yourself whether this is true or not," Dandiya said.

Former Youth Congress chief Srinivas BV also responded to Singh’s post with a sarcastic remark: “Curiosity isn’t a good thing in old age… consult a good doctor," he said.

BJP Criticises Rahul’s Foreign Visits

The latest exchange comes against the backdrop of repeated BJP criticism of Gandhi’s overseas travel. The Congress leader had returned to India shortly before Parliament’s Monsoon Session following a foreign trip between June 22 and July 13.

BJP IT cell chief Amit Malviya had earlier questioned the details of that visit and sought information about Gandhi’s itinerary and expenses.

“Rahul Gandhi’s foreign trip between June 22 and July 13 remains shrouded in mystery. Where did he go? Who did he meet? Who sponsored his travel and stay?" Malviya had posted on X.

He also questioned whether the Congress leader’s overseas engagements involved interactions relevant to India’s political or strategic interests.

Mumbai BJP president Ameet Satam had separately alleged that Gandhi met people hostile to India during his foreign travels and accused him of attempting to create political instability.

The BJP has previously claimed that Gandhi undertook dozens of foreign trips, including visits to London, New York, Italy, Germany, Qatar, Vietnam, Cambodia, Maldives and Dubai, besides alleging that he made a “secret" trip to Oman.

The party has also raised questions over the expenditure associated with Gandhi’s overseas travel, alleging that the cumulative cost was around Rs 60 crore against what it described as his declared income.

“Sworn declared income over 10 years? Mere Rs 11 crore… This is a massive funding scandal staring the nation," the BJP had said on X.

The party has also cited a 2025 CRPF communication to allege that some of Gandhi’s foreign visits were undertaken without the security-related disclosures it said were required.
