The 2026 Nobel Prize in Literature is awarded to the Canadian author Anne Carson “for her bold and inventive oeuvre that, in playful dialogue with the classical tradition, has created new forms for contemporary literature,” the Swedish Academy, Stockholm, said on Thursday (October 8, 2026).

Anne Carson published a series of notable works in the 1990s. Throughout her entire authorship, Ms. Carson, with a light touch, explores the possibilities of writing, a process by which the literary sketch has become of particular value to her.

‘The Beauty of the Husband: A Fictional Essay in 29 Tangos’, published in 2001, tells of a cutting and sardonic row with a deceitful husband, its 29 episodes each opening with lines of verse by the romantic poet John Keats. Keats’s sublime words about beauty being truth are, in brutal yet playful fashion, juxtaposed with this exhausting relationship drama.

The permanent secretary of the Swedish Academy, Ingrid Carlberg, said she had briefly spoken to Ms. Carson.

“We didn’t have so much time to speak. All she had time to tell me was that she is for the moment in Iceland, where she’s listening to the wind. She was taken by surprise but was very happy. I could hear that in her voice,” said Ms. Carlberg.

Among these is ‘The Glass Essay’ in ‘Glass, Irony, and God’ (1995), which demonstrates the potential of the long poem where genre boundaries are seen to blur.

Almost all her literary production has centred upon the intersection between the philologist’s obsession with words and the poet’s desire for new meaning. She has herself identified the etymology of words as the starting point for all her work.

It singled out her poem “Nox,” printed on one continuous sheet of paper in homage to her dead brother, as “an unforgettable work”.

The Nobel Peace Prize will be announced tomorrow (October 9, 2026). The Sveriges Riksbank Prize in Economic Sciences, popularly known as Economics Nobel will be announced on October 12.

The winners will get a cash award of 12 million Swedish kronor (about $1.2 million). The award will be presented on December 10, the Nobel Prize day, also the death anniversary of Swedish inventor Alfred Nobel, who in his will dictated that his estate should be used to fund “prizes to those who, during the preceding year, have conferred the greatest benefit to humankind”.
