For years, the Mahindra Bolero Neo has lived in a unique space in the Indian market. It has never been the flashiest SUV, nor the most feature-loaded. But what it offered was something many modern urban SUVs have slowly moved away from: toughness, simplicity, and genuine go-anywhere ability.

Now, Mahindra is looking to offer an exciting update to the Bolero Neo for the new generation of buyers. The buyers currently look not only for a rural workhorse but also for a proper lifestyle SUV, and this is Mahindra’s major forte, as it already has the Thar and Thar Roxx in its lineup. That said, we expect the updated Bolero Neo to borrow heavily from the Mahindra Thar Roxx platform, which could make the model offer old-school trust with modern comfort and tech.

Updated Mahindra Bolero – New Platform

The current Bolero Neo is based on an older ladder-on-frame setup derived from the TUV300. It is sturdy and dependable, but it also feels outdated in several ways.

Mahindra developed the Thar Roxx on its newer M_GLYDE platform, which is engineered to deliver far better ride comfort and structural rigidity while retaining off-road capability. Apart from that, the platform also offers better safety, larger dimensions and improved NVH. This is the main thing Bolero needs to avoid looking more crude.

Design

While we say the updated Bolero will be more modern, we don’t think it will be an urban crossover. Instead, the new-generation SUV will likely retain its upright stance and commanding road presence. But the styling could become significantly more modern. Expect inspiration from both the Thar Roxx and Scorpio-N design language.

The biggest transformation may come in dimensions. If it adopts the Roxx-derived underpinnings, the SUV could become noticeably wider and longer than the current Bolero Neo. The improved dimensions will instantly improve the cabin space.

Interior

The interior is where the Bolero Neo looks more outdated today. While the SUV is still practical, it stands quite far behind in terms of features compared to newer Mahindra SUVs. However, Mahindra wouldn’t load the Bolero Neo with several features, such as those on the Thar Roxx, due to price considerations. That said, we could expect a toned-down version of the feature suit, which includes a 10.25-inch touchscreen, wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, a digital instrument cluster, automatic AC, improved cabin materials, and more

Moreover, the platform also delivers better ride comfort. With improved ride comfort, the SUV will feel comfortable on highways.

Powertrains

The Mahindra Bolero Neo uses a 1.5-litre diesel engine producing 100 bhp and 260 Nm. The current powertrain and its sub-4m length help the SUV to benefit from the new GST norms. However, with the new platform, if Mahindra plans to increase the dimensions, it could also consider offering a more powerful 2.2-litre diesel engine with the model. The 2.2-litre is currently offered in the Mahindra Scorpio and Thar Roxx.

Mahindra could also introduce a rear-wheel-drive setup as standard, with selected variants getting proper 4×4 hardware.
