JSW MG Motor India has extended its Battery-as-a-Service (BaaS) ownership programme to its luxury MG SELECT portfolio. Both MG Cyberster electric roadster and MG M9 luxury electric MPV can now be purchased with a lower upfront price, with the battery charged separately on a per-kilometre basis.
Under the new programme, MG M9 is available at an introductory BaaS price of Rs 69.99 lakh + Rs 8/km, while MG Cyberster is priced at Rs 72.49 lakh + Rs 8/km. The key distinction is that these are not conventional price cuts. BaaS separates the battery component from the initial vehicle acquisition price, with customers subsequently paying for battery usage based on kilometres driven.
Around Rs 10 Lakh Lower Upfront Price
Without BaaS, MG M9 is currently priced between Rs 79.95 lakh and Rs 84.94 lakh, while Cyberster costs between Rs 82.50 lakh and Rs 87.49 lakh, ex-showroom. Comparing the starting prices, BaaS lowers the initial acquisition cost of M9 by around Rs 9.96 lakh. For Cyberster, the difference is approximately Rs 10.01 lakh.
Cyberster And M9 Cross 3,000 Sales
MG SELECT’s two electric models have already crossed 3,000 units in combined sales since launch. The introduction of BaaS could help MG expand this customer base further by lowering the amount buyers need to pay upfront.
Cyberster caters to a niche performance segment with its two-seat electric roadster format. It uses a dual-motor AWD setup producing 510 PS and 725 Nm, with MG claiming 0-100 km/h acceleration in around 3.2 seconds. Electric scissor doors are another distinctive feature.
M9, meanwhile, targets the luxury MPV segment. Its second-row Presidential Seats offer 16-way adjustment, eight massage modes, ventilation and heating. Other features include a dual sunroof, 64-colour ambient lighting, 13-speaker audio system, Level 2 ADAS, Driver Monitoring System and seven airbags.
BaaS Moves Into MG’s Luxury Portfolio
The significance of the latest announcement is that MG is taking BaaS beyond its more mainstream electric offerings and applying the ownership model to vehicles costing around Rs 70 lakh and above. For customers, the trade-off is relatively straightforward: around Rs 10 lakh lower initial acquisition cost in exchange for an ongoing Rs 8/km battery rental.
MG SELECT currently operates 15 Experience Centres across 14 cities. Having already crossed 3,000 combined Cyberster and M9 sales, the company will be looking to build on that momentum by offering buyers another way to finance and own its premium electric vehicles.
