Low-pressure area forms over Bay of Bengal; IMD predicts heavy rainfall in Odisha

Under the influence of an upper-air cyclonic circulation, a low-pressure area has formed over the northwest Bay of Bengal and adjoining West Bengal-Odisha coasts, IMD said on Sunday.

According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the system is likely to move northwards and become more active during the next 24 hours.

North and western parts of Odisha are likely to receive heavy to extremely heavy rainfall under its influence. Balasore, Bhadrak, Mayurbhanj and Keonjhar have been placed under red alert. Bolangir, Sambalpur and Sundargarh are also likely to experience heavy rain. Coastal districts including Puri, Cuttack and Khordha are also expected to witness rainfall.

Heavy Rain And Thunderstorm

The weather system is expected to influence Odisha’s weather conditions until August 24. Along with heavy rainfall, thunderstorms and lightning are likely. Wind speeds could reach 40-50 kmph from Monday.

According to reports, winds of 40-50 kmph and gusting up to 60 kmph are likely over the northwest and adjoining west-central Bay of Bengal and Odisha from August 16 to 18.

Advisory For Fishermen

Sea conditions are expected to remain very rough during the period. Fishermen have been advised not to venture into the sea.
