Iran-Israel war LIVE: Details of a deal begin to emerge as Rubio says possibility of 'good news' today

U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio said an announcement was possible later on Sunday (May 24, 2026) on a deal with Iran that could formally end the war in West Asia. “I do think perhaps there is the possibility that in the next few hours the world will get some good news,” Mr. Rubio told reporters in New Delhi. The Strait of Hormuz will be gradually open in parallel with the U.S. ending its blockade of Iran’s ports, said the official. Sanctions relief and release of Iran’s frozen funds will be negotiated during the 60-day time frame, they said. Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif said on Sunday (May 24, 2026) that he hoped Pakistan could soon host the next round of peace talks between Iran and the United States.

The United States and Iran sought on Sunday (May 24, 2026) to finalise an agreement to formally end the West Asia war after Donald Trump said a proposal that included opening the blockaded Strait of Hormuz was “largely negotiated”.

The details of the deal, as per regional officials cited by Reuters, include Iran’s commitment that it won’t pursue a nuclear weapon, and Tehran agreed to give up its stockpile of highly enriched uranium.
