Australian athlete Joanna Wietrzyk has issued a public apology after soiling herself during Hyrox Beijing, admitting she should have stepped off the track while announcing her retroactive withdrawal from the race and forfeiture of her points.
The 24-year-old elite athlete completed Saturday’s race covered in faeces after organisers failed to intervene, leaving more than 1,000 subsequent participants to compete on the contaminated track and shared equipment.
Wietrzyk previously posted “a win is a win” on social media, a statement she later deleted before turning off comments and direct messages as she faced five days of intense online backlash alongside criticism of organisers for negligence.
On Thursday, after the event and following official apologies and rule updates from organisers, Wietrzyk published a statement on social media expressing regret over the impact on fellow competitors, spectators and staff.
