Although sales declined 2.7% compared to March, Tata’s wide EV portfolio including Punch EV, Nexon EV, Harrier EV, Tiago EV, and Curvv EV helped the company stay firmly ahead of rivals.
April 2026 highlighted how India’s EV market is becoming increasingly SUV-driven.
Compact and midsize electric SUVs such as Punch EV, Nexon EV, XEV 9e, and Windsor EV dominated volumes, while premium EVs also started finding stronger acceptance.
MG continues to perform strongly thanks to Windsor EV, while Maruti Suzuki’s eVitara has made a promising debut.

Total EV dispatches stood at 22,878 units, down 7.4% month-on-month from 24,716 units in March 2026. Despite the monthly dip, the segment continues to show healthy momentum as more automakers expand their EV portfolios and consumers gradually shift toward electric mobility.

Tata Motors retained its dominance in April 2026 with sales of 9,041 electric cars, capturing a commanding 39.5% market share. Although sales declined 2.7% compared to March, Tata’s wide EV portfolio including Punch EV, Nexon EV, Harrier EV, Tiago EV, and Curvv EV helped the company stay firmly ahead of rivals.
Mahindra & Mahindra secured the second position with 6,386 units and a strong 27.9% market share. The brand’s premium electric SUV strategy driven by the XEV 9e and BE6 continues to gain traction despite a 6.5% monthly decline.
MG Motor India ranked third with 4,614 units. The company witnessed a sharper 17.9% MoM decline mainly due to lower volumes of the Windsor EV, though it still maintained a healthy 20.2% market share.
Meanwhile, Maruti Suzuki registered 2,006 units with the newly launched eVitara, giving the brand an 8.8% share in just its early months.
Hyundai Motor India and Kia India remained relatively niche players in the EV segment during April.

The MG Windsor EV emerged as India’s best-selling electric car in April 2026 with 3,296 units sold. However, the model saw a 27% MoM decline compared to March.
Mahindra 9S secured second place with 3,242 units, showing stable demand with almost flat month-on-month performance.
Tata Punch EV became Tata’s highest-selling EV with 3,225 units and impressive 12% MoM growth, highlighting rising demand for compact urban EVs.
Tata Nexon EV continued its steady run with 2,499 units, while the newer Tata Harrier EV added 1,690 units during the month.
Maruti Suzuki eVitara posted 2,006 units in April, indicating a promising entry into India’s rapidly growing EV market.
