The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) notes that chronic kidney disease often develops without noticeable symptoms and that early screening can help identify problems before serious damage occurs.
Dr Gandhi said, "Regular kidney screening is also important.
Kidney disease can be identified early with a urine test for albumin; kidney function can be determined, and treatment can be started before significant kidney damage has taken place."
Dr Shaikh added, "Lastly, there are certain precautions to be taken with supplements and OTC products, especially from less trusted sources.
Making small, steady changes to your lifestyle can make a big difference in maintaining kidney health and in your overall health and wellbeing."
One of the biggest mistakes people make is assuming their kidneys are healthy simply because they feel fine.
Dr Shaikh also highlighted another often-overlooked issue.
"Another important factor in protecting the kidneys is taking the medicines as prescribed. Medicines prescribed should be used on a regular basis and according to instructions. In addition, diabetics should try to avoid taking painkillers too often or without the advice of their doctor, as they can eventually harm the kidneys."
Over-the-counter painkillers, herbal preparations, and unregulated supplements are often considered harmless because they are easily available. But some of these products can put additional stress on the kidneys.
Dr Shaikh added, "Lastly, there are certain precautions to be taken with supplements and OTC products, especially from less trusted sources. Some of them can have ingredients that can have a negative effect on kidney function. Making small, steady changes to your lifestyle can make a big difference in maintaining kidney health and in your overall health and wellbeing."
