Black Clover wasted no time getting back into the action. After more than five years away from television, Season 2 finally returned with Asta, Yuno and the Magic Knights moving into the next stage of their war against the Spade Kingdom. The long-awaited premiere picked up where Episode 170 left off instead of easing viewers back into the story with another introductory adventure.
The Clover Kingdom's elite fighters finally began their operation to rescue Yami Sukehiro and William Vangeance. Episode 2 continues the Spade Kingdom’s raid as several of these fighters confront the Dark Triad. Opening the gates to the underworld remains one of the central threats hanging over the Magic Knights, and Episode 2 should begin demonstrating just how quickly their rescue operation can turn into something considerably larger.

Yami Sukehiro and William Vangeance remain prisoners of the Dark Triad, giving the Clover Kingdom an immediate objective. Their rescue is especially urgent because the two captains are essential to the enemy's plans involving the Tree of Qliphoth and the opening of the underworld. Asta, meanwhile, has entered a completely new stage in his relationship with Liebe.
The end of the first series revealed much more about the devil living inside Asta's five-leaf grimoire. Instead of forcing Liebe into submission during the Devil-Binding Ritual, Asta chose to form an equal contract with him. The decision reflects Asta's personality perfectly, but forming the partnership does not mean the pair automatically know how to fight together.
That is where Nacht comes in. Asta and Liebe have been training under the Black Bulls' vice-captain in an attempt to master Devil Union, which would allow Asta to use their shared Anti-Magic power far more effectively. Episode 1 continued that preparation as the larger invasion of the Spade Kingdom began. Yuno has just as much at stake.
Zenon devastated the Golden Dawn and personally captured William, leaving Yuno with both a captain to rescue and a defeat he intends to avenge. His connection to the Spade Kingdom makes the battle even more personal after learning the truth about his origins. At the same time, the situation inside the Spade Kingdom has continued to deteriorate.
Morris, the scientist previously associated with the Diamond Kingdom, is assisting the Dark Triad and making preparations to open the gates to the underworld. That process threatens far more than the captured captains. Episode 1 ultimately brought all of those separate pieces together. The rescue team has entered enemy territory and the war against the Dark Triad has properly begun.

Black Clover Season 2, Episode 2 Brings the Dark Triad Battles to the Forefront

Episode 2 should significantly increase the amount of direct combat. In Episode 2, “The Door to Hell,” Mereoleona is set to demonstrate her overwhelming magical power against the enormous demon that has appeared in the Spade Kingdom. At the same time, the Magic Knights who infiltrated the Spade Castle divide into three groups and confront members of the Dark Triad.
That means several major confrontations will begin developing simultaneously. Charlotte Roselei faces Vanica, whose devil Megicula is directly connected to the curse that has affected Charlotte's life. Yuno confronts Zenon, the man responsible for defeating the Golden Dawn and taking William Vangeance. Jack the Ripper and Nacht, meanwhile, battle Dante and his formidable Body Magic.
Those match-ups give Episode 2 considerably more personal stakes than a simple invasion. The Spade Kingdom Arc has spent considerable time establishing reasons why these particular Magic Knights need to face these particular enemies. Episode 2 of the new season finally begins paying that buildup off. The larger problem remains the underworld.
The invading Magic Knights initially believe they still have enough time before its gates open, giving them an opportunity to defeat the Dark Triad and interrupt the ritual. Something big will disrupt that assumption. This should make Episode 2 considerably more battle-heavy than the premiere. The Magic Knights will have to survive what happens when the Spade Kingdom fights back.
