Ashes rivals Australia and England are fighting for the signature of CSK batting coach Michel Hussey for a batting coach role.

‘Mr. Cricket’ Michael Hussey might be the most in-demand coach in cricket right now. The former Australian batter, who averaged 51.5 in his relatively short but very successful Test career, is being courted by both Australia and England’s national men’s teams for a batting coach role. At the same time, Chennai Super Kings (CSK)’s high-profile fans are urging Hussey, the franchise’s batting mentor, to take a promotion.

English media reported a couple of days ago that the new Test coach Stephen Fleming was ‘confident’ of wooing Hussey, his long-term aide at CSK, to join his staff for the new job. Hussey was asked about the reports and admitted that he had indeed got an offer from Fleming, adding that he ‘wouldn’t say never to anything’, even joining Australia’s biggest rival.

“We obviously get on really well and worked a lot together. It was just a bit of a passing comment, really, saying, ‘Look, what, what do you reckon? Would you, would you think about being the batting coach?’" But on Sunday, Code Sports in Australia claimed that the country’s board has made a strong pitch to the former cricketer in an attempt to secure his services with ‘a sense of urgency’ to prevent him from joining England.

Both Australia and England’s batting lineups are carrying an unsettled look. Australia’s squad is ageing and the lack of role clarity was exposed in the first Test against Bangladesh.

In the current World Test Championship cycle, England’s batters average 31.12, the fourth best in nine teams, while Australia’s batters are third from bottom at 27.84.

Meanwhile, former India captain and selector Kris Srikkanth has appealed to Hussey that it would be a ‘mistake’ if he joins Fleming.

“I would advise Michael Hussey not to make that mistake. He would be made to work with Stephen Fleming again. He should continue with CSK as they’ll take care of him brilliantly. Fleming has no work but to go to different places and call Hussey," Srikkanth said on his YouTube channel.
