Cricket fans and fellow players are congratulating Karn Sharma on an illustrious career that saw him become the only player to win three consecutive IPL titles with three different franchises. Sharma, who played one Test, one T20 and two ODIs for India, announced his immediate retirement from all formats of professional cricket on Sunday.
The 38-year-old all-rounder played his one and only Test against Australia in 2014, taking four wickets for 238 runs in Adelaide. He captured the prized scalps of David Warner (twice), Michael Clarke and Chris Rogers.

Unfortunately for Sharma and India, Warner made 145 and 102 in each innings before the spinner dismissed him, while Clarke made 128 as Australia won the Test by 48 runs. It was the famous match in which Nathan Lyon took seven wickets in the second innings (and 12 overall) as India collapsed on the final day. Sharma actually finished on four not out as he watched the carnage unfold around him.

The leg-spinner was far more prolific in T20 cricket and was part of four championship-winning teams in the IPL. He won with Sunrisers Hyderabad in 2016, Mumbai Indians in 2017 and Chennai Super Kings in 2018 and 2021.

He's one of three players to win three-straight IPL titles and the only player in history to do it with three different franchises. He took 169 wickets and scored 1601 runs in 192 T20 matches.
"I am extremely grateful to my family, BCCI, Railways, UPCA, Andhra, Vidarbha Cricket Association and everyone who has supported me throughout this journey," Karn announced. "After this, I will be available for coaching and other responsibilities related to the game of cricket."

Karn made his first-class and List A debut in 2007, meaning his professional career spanned 20 years. In the 2012-13 season he captured 21 wickets at an average of 19.04 as was named best Under-25 cricketer by the BCCI (Board of Control for Cricket in India).

In 2014 at the IPL auction he earned the highest auction price for an uncapped Indian player at the time. His efforts in the tournament saw him picked in India's white-ball squads to tour England later that year, and he dismissed Joe Root for his lone wicket in his only T20 international game.
