TL;DR The newly redesigned iPad mini eliminates traditional Android advantages by adding an 8.5-inch OLED display and a durable IP67 dust- and water-resistant rating in a 5.4mm frame.
Powered by the 2nm A20 Pro chip alongside custom N1 wireless and C2 5G silicon, it outperforms budget-tier Android slates while retaining Apple Pencil Pro support.
A $200 price hike to $699 leaves room for potential Android challengers, but weak market interest means Apple will likely maintain its grip on the segment.
Apple has officially unveiled the redesigned iPad mini, handing its smallest slate an overdue top-to-bottom transformation highlighted by a shift to OLED, a new SoC, and a thinner chassis. The announcement is the first in Apple’s late-October iPad and Mac showcase but follows the HomeView reveal earlier in the month, positioning the petite tablet less as a casual media viewer and more like a pocketable iPad Air.
According to Apple’s announcement, the refreshed iPad mini slate trades the long-standing 8.3-inch LCD for a larger 8.5-inch OLED display. The panel delivers more than double the peak brightness of its predecessor, along with deep contrast and true blacks, thanks to the shift to OLED. For creators needing to tame reflections, Apple is also making its matte nano-texture display glass available on the iPad mini for the first time. However, the refresh rate is still only 60Hz.
Despite growing the screen diagonal, Apple managed to shave the tablet’s thickness down to just 5.4mm, down from the previous model’s 6.3mm profile. The redesign also introduces an IP67 rating for dust and water resistance, addressing a long-standing vulnerability for a device frequently tossed into backpacks and used on the go.
That IP rating ties directly into Apple’s new Acoustic Display: the tablet pairs custom woofers directly through the display alongside tweeters hidden between the glass and aluminum enclosure in a sealed acoustic chamber. While sound-on-display piezoelectric technology has appeared in select smartphones before, this marks the first time a mainstream tablet has deployed an acoustic screen system.
Under the hood, the compact slate makes a multi-generational leap by adopting the 2nm A20 Pro chipset, which also powers Apple’s current flagship iPhones. The silicon upgrade delivers substantial sustained performance gains for graphics-intensive gaming and on-device Apple Intelligence tasks. It also integrates Apple’s custom in-house silicon for connectivity: the N1 wireless networking chip for Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 6, and Thread, as well as the second-generation C2 cellular modem system on 5G variants.
Note that the 128GB and 256GB variants have an A20 Pro chip with a 5-core CPU, 7-core GPU, and a 16-core Neural Engine, while the 512GB variant bumps up the A20 Pro to a 6-core CPU, 7-core GPU, and a dual 16-core Neural Engine.
The front-facing FaceTime camera has also shifted to a landscape orientation, bringing it in line with the rest of Apple’s modern tablet roster.
For creative workflows, the new iPad mini retains full stylus support for the Apple Pencil Pro, complete with squeeze, barrel roll, and haptic feedback, as well as the lower-priced Apple Pencil (USB-C).

Android brands should be concerned with the iPad mini’s launch
With the new iPad mini, Apple has fixed a few key complaints with its small tablet. For one, the move to OLED was long overdue and gives users one less reason to pick up the much more expensive iPad Pro. Two, IP67 ratings have been missing from Apple’s tablet lineup, and that was one of the advantages Android brands had long pinned their hopes on.
For years, mainstream Android OEMs have treated sub-9-inch tablets as bargain-bin media slabs (like Samsung’s budget Galaxy Tab A-series). If you wanted a premium, pocketable tablet with top-tier silicon, the iPad mini was already effectively the default choice. By equipping it with the A20 Pro, OLED, and IP67 durability, Apple is solidifying its monopoly on the “small-but-mighty” form factor.
