Amazon eyes biggest-ever Prime Day as membership base nears 2x growth since 2023

Bengaluru: Amazon India is betting on its biggest-ever Prime Day as the e-commerce giant prepares to celebrate the 10th edition of the annual shopping event with more than 500 product launches, its widest-ever selection, and anniversary deals across over 15,000 products from 300-plus brands. "We are on track to double our Prime Members base between 2023 and 2026," Akshay Sahi, VP – prime and customer fulfilment experience, India and emerging countries, Amazon, told ET Retail. Today, nearly 70% of new Prime members come from tier II and tier III cities. "We focus on what we can control—ensuring customers have access to great deals, a wide selection, and ample inventory. That means the biggest deals of the decade, our widest-ever selection, hundreds of new launches and blockbuster entertainment, all brought together in one event," Sahi said.

The three-day event will run from July 4 to July 6.The company expects this year's edition to be its largest yet, backed by rapid growth in Prime membership, deeper penetration beyond metros and continued investments in its fulfilment network."We are on track to double our Prime Members base between 2023 and 2026," Akshay Sahi, VP – prime and customer fulfilment experience, India and emerging countries, Amazon, told ET Retail."Prime has truly become a Bharat phenomenon. Today, nearly 70% of new Prime members come from tier II and tier III cities. During the last Prime Day, we delivered to customers across 99% of India's PIN codes," he said.To support the growth, Amazon said it invested Rs 2,000 crore in strengthening its operations network last year and has announced another Rs 2,800 crore investment this year. The expansion includes 20 new fulfilment centres, additional sort centres and expanded last-mile delivery stations.This year's Prime Day will offer more than 500 new launches from Indian and global brands, alongside what Amazon calls " 10th Anniversary Deals " across smartphones, laptops, home appliances, fashion, beauty and everyday essentials. New customers can join Prime at Rs 999 a year during the event, while Prime Lite and Prime Shopping Edition will also be available at discounted prices.Despite macroeconomic uncertainties, Amazon said it has worked closely with sellers to ensure inventory and selection remain strong during the event."We focus on what we can control—ensuring customers have access to great deals, a wide selection, and ample inventory. We've worked closely with our selling partners to make sure we're fully prepared to serve millions of Prime members throughout the event," Sahi said.According to him, Prime Day remains a key shopping occasion for customers planning large purchases.Among the key categories this year are flagship smartphones, televisions, laptops, home appliances and fashion."One of the highlights this year is our specially curated 10th Anniversary Deals, which have been created to deliver exceptional value across categories and will be clearly identifiable across the shopping experience," Sahi said.Amazon also said Prime members are becoming increasingly engaged with its ecosystem."On average, Prime members shop nearly five times more than non-members, both in terms of frequency and across categories," Sahi said, adding that customers using Amazon Now increase their shopping frequency by nearly three times further.Beyond shopping, Prime Video will launch 21 new titles around Prime Day, while Amazon has also introduced "Prime Playback", an AI-powered personalised video experience that showcases members' shopping milestones, savings and streaming favourites."The headline this year is simple—it's our 10th anniversary.
