A 28-year-old Indian immigrant was shot dead by an unidentified attacker while delivering pizza in New York City’s Brooklyn.
The victim has been identified as Gurdeep Singh, who hailed from Jabowal village in Punjab’s Kapurthala district. His family said Singh travelled to the United States in 2017 through the ‘dunki route’, a term commonly used for irregular migration to Western countries.

The Sikh immigrant had been working as a delivery partner in New York and was living in the US on a work permit. His family said he had not returned home in nearly nine years.

Singh’s father, Pyara Lal, said his son had borrowed heavily to fund his journey to the US and faced considerable difficulties after arriving there. Despite the challenges, he worked long hours in the hope of securing a better future for his family, according to an NDTV report.
The killing has prompted concern among members of the Punjabi and Sikh diaspora in North America.

“Every time a young Punjabi or Sikh person is killed, a family is destroyed. We cannot allow repeated violence to become something the community simply learns to live with," NAPA executive director Satnam Singh Chahal said, according to PTI.
NAPA also said, “The Sikh and Punjabi diaspora deserves the protection every American deserves."
