Mamta took sanyas during the Maha Kumbh in Prayagraj on January 24, 2025. She performed the Pind Daan ritual at the Sangam and was given the spiritual name Shri Yamai Mamta Nand Giri. She was also appointed Mahamandaleshwar of the Kinnar Akhara.

Her appointment later became controversial within the Akhara. She resigned from the position in February 2025 but later said her resignation had not been accepted and that she would continue her spiritual journey.

Mamta Kulkarni left Bollywood after becoming one of the most recognised actresses of the 1990s. She was away from Mumbai for around 24 years before returning in 2024. During those years, she was linked to Vicky Goswami, who has been described in media reports as an alleged drug lord. In 2016, Thane Police named Mamta as an accused in a drug case linked to Goswami and alleged that she had attended a meeting in Kenya connected to the racket. Mamta denied being involved in the drug trade.

There was a major legal development in 2024 when the Bombay High Court quashed the drug case against Mamta, saying the proceedings against her were manifestly frivolous and that there was not enough material to continue the prosecution. Mamta returned to Mumbai in December 2024 after years away. At the time, she made it clear that she was not returning to Bollywood and said her focus was on her spiritual journey.
