Following its launch last month, Yamaha YZF R2 has started arriving at dealer showrooms ahead of the first batch of customer deliveries. Priced from Rs 2.30 lakh, the new fully faired motorcycle expands Yamaha’s R-series lineup and offers an upgrade option for buyers seeking more performance than the R15.
Three variants are available—YZF R2, YZF R2 QS and the range-topping YZF R2M. With showroom arrivals underway during the festive season, prospective buyers can get a closer look at the motorcycle ahead of deliveries.
Yamaha R2 Arrives At Showroom
The dealership arrival brings the Yamaha YZF R2 a step closer to customers following its price announcement. The first batch of deliveries is expected to begin soon, although buyers should check with their respective dealerships for allocation and handover timelines.
Positioned above the R15, the R2 primarily competes with the KTM RC 200. Its key highlights include R-series-inspired styling, a 204 cc engine, a lightweight chassis and an up/down quickshifter on the higher variants.
204cc Engine Produces 26.5 PS
Yamaha YZF R2 uses a 204 cc, liquid-cooled DOHC engine producing 26.5 PS and 19.1 Nm of torque. In comparison, the KTM RC 200’s 199.5 cc, liquid-cooled, single-cylinder DOHC engine develops 25 PS and 19.2 Nm. The R2 therefore offers 1.5 PS more power, while torque output is closely matched.
The motorcycle also provides a step up from the Yamaha R15, which uses a 155 cc, liquid-cooled SOHC engine producing 18.4 PS and 14.2 Nm. With the R15 priced between Rs 1.75 lakh and Rs 2.01 lakh, the R2’s Rs 2.30 lakh starting price gives buyers another option within Yamaha’s sports bike range.
An up/down quickshifter is standard on the R2 QS and R2M. It allows clutchless shifts under suitable operating conditions, helping reduce interruptions during acceleration and simplifying downshifts. This adds to the motorcycle’s appeal for enthusiasts interested in both road riding and occasional track use.
149 Kg Weight, Adjustable Hardware
Yamaha R2 has a wet weight of 149 kg, compared with the KTM RC 200’s quoted kerb weight of 160 kg. Its newly developed high-tensile steel diamond frame is paired with a pivot-mounted aluminium die-cast swingarm. Yamaha states that the chassis is 2.8 kg lighter than the R15’s.
With 26.5 PS and a 149 kg wet weight, the R2 has a power-to-weight ratio of approximately 0.178 PS/kg. The combination of low weight and increased output is a key part of its performance proposition.
Equipment includes adjustable USD front forks, adjustable levers and adjustable footpegs. The bike rides on 17-inch wheels with 100/80 front and 140/70 rear tubeless tyres. Braking duties are handled by a 282 mm front disc and a 220 mm rear disc, supported by dual-channel ABS.
Riding Modes, TFT Display And Connected Features
The R2’s electronics package includes traction control, an electronically controlled throttle body and Street, Sport and Rain riding modes. An assist and slipper clutch also forms part of the equipment list.
A 5-inch full-colour TFT display offers Bluetooth connectivity, with connected functions accessible through Yamaha’s Y-Connect smartphone app. Other highlights include a smart key, signature LED headlight, a premium 3D emblem and a choice of colours. Yamaha is also offering accessories for buyers looking to personalise their motorcycle.
