It’s been a great week so far at the WTA 1000 in Wuhan, China, with some stunning runs, an amazing upset, and a return to dominance from Iga Swiatek. We’re up to the semifinals now, with tons of points and prize money on the line. Who do you think will reach the final? As always, we share our thoughts on both matches.

WTA Wuhan Semifinal Predictions

Sonay Kartal vs Jelena Ostapenko

This has been, without question, the best week of Sonay Kartal’s career. That is true both in terms of accomplishment (it’s her first WTA 1000 semifinal) as well as her level. The upset of Elina Svitolina in the quarterfinal was exceptional, as were her demolitions of strong opponents in the first three rounds. But Jelena Ostapenko is a different challenge. The Latvian has had some moments of inconsistency, as she always does, but her powerful game has been in rhythm far too often this week. When she’s playing like this, she’s near unbeatable. Kartal has rarely faced pace and power like Okstapenko brings, and I don’t think the Brit will be able to keep up in the rallies as the match wears on.

Prediction: Ostapenko in 3

Iga Swiatek vs Maja Chwalinska

This week has been very important for both women. Swiatek is showing that, despite her recent inconsistencies and ranking drop, she still is one of the best in the world and should be feared. Chwalinska, meanwhile, is showing that her French Open final run was no fluke. There were questions after she hadn’t backed up that performance for five months, but much of that was due to injury. Her unique style and crafty game has flummoxed opponents all week. I wouldn’t be surprised if she throws Swiatek out of her comfort zone, too.

Prediction: Chwalinska in 3
