US President Donald Trump revealed that he spoke with Iranian officials overnight on Saturday and warned against any attempts to close the strategically important Strait of Hormuz, threatening to take control of the waterway and collect tolls if Tehran made any such move.
“You close it, and you won’t have a country. You won’t even make it back to your f***ng country," he told Fox News on Sunday.
Trump also said the US could become the ‘Guardian angel’ of the Strait of Hormuz and take 20% of the oil exports that pass through the corridor. “We may take over the Strait, if we have to. I’ll blow the sh*t out of them."
“If they don’t make a deal, we’ll collect tolls," he warned.
Earlier, Trump warned that the US will impose its own maritime tolls on the Strait of Hormuz if a final peace agreement with Iran is not finalised within 60 days. He framed potential American fees as legitimate reimbursement for services rendered by the US military, acting as a “Guardian Angel" to countries throughout West Asia
‘Will Take Over Rest Of Iran’
Earlier, Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian said Tehran will not relinquish its right to enrich uranium and the US “will have no choice but to accept this right."
Responding to Pezeshkian’s claims, Trump told Fox News, “He better watch his mouth. He better shape up, or we will take over the rest of the country." He also asserted that he maintains a variety of options if Iran does not make serious commitments towards a final deal.
Regarding oil exports, Trump said 19 million barrels of crude oil exited the Persian Gulf yesterday as a result of the memorandum of understanding with Iran.
US-Iran Talks
His remarks came as US and Iranian negotiators held high-level talks in Switzerland on Sunday, marking their first face-to-face talks in more than ten weeks, with Tehran’s nuclear program and Israel’s fighting in Lebanon expected to be high on the agenda.
US Vice President JD Vance, leading the American delegation, said Washington was willing to “fundamentally transform" its relations with Tehran if the latter was willing to “give up being a driver of regional instability."
He also said Trump was committed towards “full regional ceasefire" and the US was making progress towards stopping the conflict between Israel and Hezbollah in Lebanon.
