A woman died after allegedly falling from the roof of her matrimonial home in Uttar Pradesh’s Ghaziabad, nearly six months after her love marriage. Her family alleged that she was being tortured over dowry demands.

The tragic incident took place on September 7 and the woman breathed her last during treatment at a hospital two days later. The deceased has been identified as Akriti, who had tied the knot with Gaurav in March this year.

Call To Family Before Fall

The FIR alleges that dowry-related disputes began around the time of the wedding, with the groom’s family allegedly seeking an additional car. Akriti and Gaurav later registered their court marriage at the Ghaziabad Registrar’s office on March 23.

Her family alleged that Gaurav subsequently demanded cash to repay a loan and subjected Akriti to physical and mental harassment when the demands were not met. They also claimed that she had secretly contacted them to inform them about the alleged abuse and threats.

On September 7, at around 9 pm, Akriti allegedly called her family and said that Gaurav, his parents Ramesh and Saroj, and her sisters-in-law were assaulting her and trying to kill her. The call reportedly ended soon after.

Her family later received a call from Gaurav informing them that Akriti had fallen from the roof. She was taken to hospital but she succumbed to her injuries.

In-Laws Booked

Thereafter, Muradnagar police registered a case against Gaurav, Ramesh, Saroj, Neha and Soni following Prabhat’s complaint. Gaurav was arrested on September 12.

“Based on the received written complaint in the aforementioned case, an FIR has been registered at Muradnagar Police Station under relevant sections, and the accused (the deceased’s husband) has been arrested. Further legal proceedings are underway," the Deputy Commissioner of Police (Rural) Commissionerate, Ghaziabad, posted on X.

According to police, Gaurav admitted during questioning to demanding Rs 30 lakh and a Scorpio-N and allegedly harassing Akriti over dowry, India Today reported.

The circumstances surrounding her death and the allegations of murder remain under investigation. Police said further action will depend on the post-mortem findings and other evidence collected during the probe.
