Thousands of protesters, alleging irregularities in Jharkhand recruitment exams, clashed with police near the state Assembly on Monday. Security personnel used water cannons, fired tear gas shells and resorted to lathi charges to stop them from reaching the legislature. Multiple protesters claimed cops thrashed them on their heads, faces and arms.

The BJP has called for a 16-hour statewide strike in Jharkhand to protest against the crackdown on the protesters. However, fresh visuals from this morning showed BJP protesters burning tyres and blocking roads in several pockets of Ranchi before many of them were detained. Meanwhile, Congress chief Mallikarjun Kharge said that the party is in talks with Chief Minister Hemant Soren-led government over the matter.
