A 24-year-old Indian-origin woman, Kirandeep Kaur, was allegedly stabbed to death after a man broke into her home in Hayes, west London, while she was asleep. Her husband, who is also in his 20s, was found outside the property with stab wounds and was taken to hospital for treatment.

The condition of the couple’s newborn baby, who was born only a few weeks ago, has not been disclosed.

UK police arrested Daniel Sean James, 44, on Sunday in connection with the attack after he matched the suspect’s description. According to Metro UK, the accused had injuries consistent with jumping from a window.

Kaur’s family told Punjab-based PTC News that they believe the attacker entered her bedroom and assaulted her with a sharp-edged weapon in what they suspect was a racist attack.

James has since been charged with attempted murder and possession of a bladed article. He appeared before Willesden Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday. However, police said there is currently no evidence to classify the incident as a hate crime and added that investigators are “keeping an open mind and exploring every line of inquiry."

‘A Wonderful Mother’

Kirandeep had moved to the UK nearly two years ago on a student visa. She later secured a work permit and has been living and working in the country.

According to Metro, her parents, Sukhdev Singh and Baljeet Kaur, sold all their farmland in Punjab’s Tarn Taran district to finance her education in Britain, hoping she would later help her siblings settle abroad.

Following her death, the grieving parents appealed to the government to facilitate the return of her body to India and urged UK authorities to ensure those responsible are punished.

Speaking to Metro, Kaur’s brother-in-law, Sahib, remembered her as a devoted mother.

“She had just had a baby. The family was so happy. We are heartbroken. She was a wonderful mother," he said.

Neighbour Ruby also described Kaur as a warm and caring young mother who adored her newborn.

“She was really nice, just a smiley, friendly young lady. I can’t imagine why this would have happened. I didn’t hear anything overnight, but then, first thing in the morning, there were police everywhere," she told Metro.

“She had just had a baby very recently. She looked so happy being a mum. The baby is so cute, and we were all so pleased for the mum. We are all heartbroken," she added.
