NASA's Voyager 1, launched 49 years ago on September 5, 1977, is now travelling through interstellar space and remains the farthest human-made object from Earth.
It is approaching a distance of one light-day, or 25.902 billion km, from Earth, a milestone it will reach in November.
Voyager 1 crossed into interstellar space in August 2012 and remains operational, NASA said.
