West Bengal police search Abhishek Banerjee’s Kolkata residence

Police broke into the residence of Trinamool Congress general secretary Abhishek Banerjee’s residence at Patuapara Road in Kalighat area of the city in the early hours of Saturday (June 13, 2026) morning. Trinamool Congress chairperson Mamata Banerjee reached her nephew’s house in the morning after hearing about the police operation. However, it is the West Bengal Assembly signature scandal being investigated by the CID that is turning out to be a challenge for Mr. Banerjee. The ECI (Election Commission) knew that if they started a case against Abhishek Banerjee, they would have to do the same against Amit Shah. Several FIRs have been registered against Abhishek Banerjee and Mamata Banerjee after the Trinamool Congress lost the Assembly polls in the State.

Police broke into the residence of Trinamool Congress general secretary Abhishek Banerjee’s residence at Patuapara Road in Kalighat area of the city in the early hours of Saturday (June 13, 2026) morning. Personnel from Salboni police station in the State’s Paschim Medinipur district entered the Trinamool leader’s residence and said that they were looking for Sumit Roy, the personal assistant of Abhishek Banerjee.

A complaint against Mr. Roy was filed at Salboni police station and the police were on the lookout for him in a financial embezzlement case. A district police officer said that the ‘tower location’ of the personal assistant’s mobile was last seen at Abhishek Banerjee's house.

Mamata reaches house

Accusing the police of harassment, the Trinamool general secretary said that he had filmed the police action at his house in the early hours of Saturday and kept a record of it.

Trinamool Congress chairperson Mamata Banerjee reached her nephew’s house in the morning after hearing about the police operation. The former Chief Minister did not want to comment on the police action.

Mr. Banerjee has been summoned in several cases, including the West Bengal Assembly signature scandal for the second occasion on June 14 and by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) in a recruitment scam on June 15. On June 16, he has been asked to appear before Criminal Investigation Department (CID) in connection with another case involving a provocative speech that he allegedly made during the Assembly election campaign. In that speech, the Trinamool leader had said that DJ music would be played instead of Rabindra sangeet after election results are declared on May 4, a comment construed as a call to violence by some.

However, it is the West Bengal Assembly signature scandal being investigated by the CID that is turning out to be a challenge for Mr. Banerjee. On June 11, Mr. Banerjee was questioned by the CID for over five hours in thesignature scandal and is likely to appear again on Sunday (June 14).

Speaking to media persons on Friday (June 12), Mr. Banerjee said that he had learnt that the CID team had arrived at his residence.

‘Never evaded probe’

“I requested my office staff to receive the notice, but the officers did not hand it over. I was not able to leave the meeting midway. The next time CID visits, I would request the officers to contact me beforehand so that I can personally receive the notice. I have never tried to evade the investigation and have always extended full cooperation,” the Diamond Harbour MP said.

Mr. Banerjee said that if he had spoken about playing DJ music after the elections, then the Union Home Minister had said that Trinamool Congress supporters would be hung upside down.

“Every action has an equal and opposite reaction. The ECI (Election Commission) knew that if they started a case against Abhishek Banerjee, they would have to do the same against Amit Shah. But (Chief Election Commissioner) Gyanesh Kumar did not have the guts to do that,” he claimed.
