Mexico Earthquake: A powerful 7.4-magnitude earthquake struck off the Pacific coast near Puerto Madero in southern Mexico on Friday, sending strong tremors across parts of Mexico and neighbouring Guatemala.

The earthquake struck about 71 kilometres off Puerto Madero on Mexico’s Pacific coast at a depth of 10 kilometres, according to the GeoShake Community Seismic Network. Following the quake, the US Tsunami Warning System issued a tsunami threat alert for parts of the Pacific coastline.

The quake shook buildings, triggered emergency alerts and forced residents to evacuate homes, offices and public spaces in several affected areas. In Guatemala, the tremors were also felt across multiple regions, prompting authorities to monitor the situation and assess any potential damage.

Emergency response teams were deployed as officials in both countries began evaluating the impact of the earthquake. Authorities urged residents to remain cautious and follow safety advisories amid the possibility of aftershocks.

While preliminary reports did not immediately indicate widespread destruction, officials continued to assess infrastructure, public utilities and transportation networks in the affected regions.

Venezuela Earthquake

The earthquake is among the strongest to hit the region in recent years, highlighting the seismic vulnerability of the Pacific Ring of Fire, one of the world’s most active earthquake zones.

The earthquake comes just weeks after Venezuela was devastated by twin earthquakes that left thousands dead and displaced tens of thousands more.

On June 24, powerful earthquakes measuring 7.2 and 7.5 struck within a minute of each other, causing widespread destruction in the coastal state of La Guaira, north of Caracas.

According to the latest figures released by National Assembly chief Jorge Rodriguez, the disaster has claimed 4,829 lives. More than 16,700 people were injured, though authorities say most have since been discharged from hospitals.

The earthquakes also left at least 20,857 people homeless, forcing many to seek shelter in overcrowded temporary camps. Relief agencies and local authorities continue to grapple with shortages of clean water, sanitation facilities and other essential services as recovery efforts remain underway.
