After crushing Afghanistan by an innings and 300 runs in the one-off Test played in Mullanpur, New Chandigarh, from June 6 to 8, the Indian men’s cricket team will now take on the Hashmatullah Shahidi-led side in a three-match ODI series. The series opener is scheduled to be played at the Himachal Pradesh Cricket Association (HPCA) Stadium in Dharamsala on June 13, while the remaining two ODIs will take place at the Ekana Stadium in Lucknow on June 17 and the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai on June 20.
Shubman Gill will captain the hosts in their first ODI series of the 2026-27 season, with newly appointed T20I captain Shreyas Iyer serving as his deputy. The Indian selectors named a strong squad for the first-ever bilateral ODI series against Afghanistan last month, but injuries to batting superstar Virat Kohli and all-rounder Hardik Pandya have ruled them out of the series. Their absence comes as a major setback for the Men in Blue, given their importance to India’s white-ball setup.
India last played an ODI series in January 2026 against New Zealand and suffered a disappointing 1-2 defeat at home. The selectors have made several changes to the squad since then, with as many as three players receiving their maiden ODI call-ups.
Here’s a look at the changes in India’s ODI squad for the three-match series against Afghanistan:
Who’s In
Wicketkeeper-batter Ishan Kishan has returned to India’s ODI squad after more than two years. The left-handed batter from Jharkhand, who scored more than 300 runs for India during the 2026 T20 World Cup, last played an ODI on October 11, 2023, against Afghanistan in Delhi. He is expected to serve as KL Rahul’s backup wicketkeeper and could bat at No. 3 in the absence of Kohli.
In addition to Kishan, fast bowlers Prince Yadav and Gurnoor Brar, along with spinner Harsh Dubey, have also been included in the ODI squad. All three have earned their maiden ODI call-ups.
All-rounder Hardik Pandya was originally named in India’s squad on May 19, 2026, but reports suggest that he has suffered an injury and will miss the series against Afghanistan.
