India will look to restore some of the lost pride from the humiliating 6-0 whitewash against Ireland and England in the three-ODI rubber against the Three Lions, which begins on Tuesday (July 14). Though there are similar holes in the 50-over side as the T20I one, the performance against Afghanistan showed how the Men in Blue possess enough quality and talent to offset most of it.
The team that’ll take on England is also slightly different from the one that took on Afghanistan. The most important change is the return of Virat Kohli. The batting talisman missed all the action in the past month due to a hamstring injury he picked up while batting in the IPL 2026 final.
When it was confirmed he’d miss the series against Afghanistan, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) called up young left-hander Yashasvi Jaiswal to the squad. Jaiswal scored a fabulous 110 in the third match but was dropped to make way for Kohli here.
An equally welcome return is that of Jasprit Bumrah. The lead pacer has missed all cricket since IPL 2026, as he has been deliberately wrapped in cotton wool to manage his workload and prevent him from any more serious injuries after his back troubles in the 2024-25 Border-Gavaskar Trophy.
There are two more like-for-like changes: young all-rounder Harsh Dubey was dropped despite performing well against Afghanistan, making way for senior pro Axar Patel. Plus, pace all-rounder Nitish Kumar Reddy was ruled out due to another injury, allowing Shivam Dube to return to the ODI set-up.
Other changes
The above changes are four official tweaks between the squads. However, it also needs to be noted that senior all-rounder Hardik Pandya was part of the Afghanistan squad but ended up being sidelined from that series as well as the tour of UK. Then, Prince Yadav wasn’t part of the England ODI squad despite being around for the Afghanistan series. He was included on Sunday after Harshit Rana was ruled out.
